I'd say that was about 1970...?
When/where was it, and the occassion?
Looks to be pool shooting in the back. |

To the best of my recollection the picture was taken in the early 70's. I was playing at the Hawaiian Gardens in L.A. Calif. The show was put on by my good friend Blackie Taylor.
I remember the stage lights were bright so I could not see the audience clearly. After playing a few songs I got on the mike to say something to the crowd. When I shaded my eyes with my hand, to my unimaginable surprise, there sat Noel and Joaquin on the front row. I was absolutely stunned, so I immediately announced I was going to take an intermission and try to calm myself because both my steel guitar idols were sitting on the front row.
Both were exceptionally kind men who later became my good friends. Needless to say, I was in shambles the remainder of the show. It was an experience and an honor I will never forget. |

Reece.
You were playing at a really high standard in the early 70's. I would think that they were gratified to see you taking the pedal steel to a new level.
Both Noel and Joaquin could be described as being before their time. Great picture. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Reece, would that have been the show that Blackie put on at a club called the Imperial Inn in Santa Fe Springs, Calif? It sort of looks like it....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

I think it's really impressive that there once was a time when a steel guitar show warranted a suit and tie. I think that's awesome. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Jerry H....You're possibly right. I was so honored, and surprised, I could have easily been convinced I was in Chicago. I know one thing for sure, I was deffinently in the state of "shock"......wherever that is. |

Chris, either Joaquin didn't care, didn't think it was warranted, or, didn't have a tie (or suit for that matter...) for the show.
Ever the independent one, he looks out of place, but comfortable.
I'll never get over having grown up in So. Cal and not known about JM, as I'd loved to have at least met him, even if he was a grumpy gus at times.
Great pic! |
