Back in the later 60's or early 70's when I lived in vegas for a short time, I remember a steel player who was working the smaller clubs. They said he was Curly's brother. Just wondering what happened to him as I never saw a post about him on the Forum. THANKS BOB |

Bob, I have some recordings of Curly and Thumbs playing with Bobby Hines in Vegas, its live mid to late 60s.
Jimmy Chalker is playing Bass and he is no slouch.
Also Speedy West told me that Jimmy could play great Jerry Bryd type steel.

Thanks for the response. I see you're from Yucca valley. I played steel and lead with Slim and Willy at the Longhorn in the early 70's then went on the road with them for several years. also played for Pappy and Harriet. Sorry to say Slim,Willy and Pappy have passed on. Bob |

Bob,I have only been here a couple of years.
I have played steel, and bass a bunch of times up at Pappy and Harriet's, its a great joint and Harriet's alive and kicking, she is a great lady.
Hey did you ever run into Jimmy Bryant up here? he and Russell Hayden used to own the Red Dog saloon up the street from Pappy's.

I don't know if I met Jimmy Bryant. Been too many years. The Longhorn was past the yucca airport and up the hill. I heard Harriet bought a club in Bullhead City or Laughlin. This brings back some good memories. BOB |

Jimmy Chalker did play bass in Curly's LV band and he would sometimes hand off the bass and double on steel when Curls played trumpet. Jimmy was no slouch on steel guitar either, pedal or otherwise.
It may have been Bobby Dyson who had some reel to reel tapes that he played me of he, Jimmy and Curly in just such an arrangement. I thought it was Curls on steel till I heard the trumpet I have also seen a promo picture somewhere of that particular band onstage in the same configuration. |

Lee: Thanks for mentioning Bobby Hines playing with Curly Chalker in Las Vegas. Bobby played steel and Sax. Bobby is one of the finenst steel players to come down the pike and has liitle recognition. I talk to Bobby several times a year and he always asks about anyone still in So. Calif. Bobby lives just outside Denver, Co. but does not play any gigs anymore. He has a "Band in a Box" and just plays at home. Bobby was way ahead of a lot of steel players in playing Jazz back in the 50's and 60's. |
