Thanks Kyle... It was a fun afternoon and he's an interesting guy for sure. It went by pretty quick and I wasn't sure how much stuff that I played would end up on the record. I'll have to go back and listen again.
I seem to have found a little niche where most of my free lance recording work these days seems to be with sort of "left of center" or "Americana" or "alt-country" kind of acts, or whatever people want to call it... I find these kind of artists are usually really open to a wide range of things from the steel, from really "retro" old school country styles to ambient or "atmospheric" things that might not make some people think of pedal steel at all (sometimes on the same session).
I've been joking for years that the kind of records I tend to play on get reviewed in "No Depression" magazine but don't get much radio airplay; with "No Depression" folding I guess I'm gonna have to find a new joke! |

Here's a few things that I guess fit that description:
"Begonias" - Caitlyn Cary and Thad Cockrell
"The Good Life" - Justin Townes Earle
"His Hands" - Candi Staton
"Subtitulo" - Josh Rouse
"Show" - Allison Moorer
FWIW I'm also on the upcoming Patty Loveless album, which to me is as pure country as it gets. But since this project is very "old school" country (60's and 70's era) and probably won't get played on today's country radio formats I suppose it qualifies now too (and she was the subject of a long " No Depression" cover story a few years back). I'm not a big one for strict labels anyway, and it seems that to try to define just what "americana" or "alt-country" is would be even harder (and to me just as pointless) as trying to define exactly what "country" means these days. Anyway, any "format" that seems to welcome and include the diversity of folks like Emmylou Harris, Bill Frisell and Solomon Burke would be mighty hard to pin down (which is a good thing IMHO !).
Thanks again for your interest, and the kind words... |

Hey Kyle,
Pete played some great steel on an old Foster and Lloyd CD called "Version of the Truth" that you might like. I don't know if it's still available but it's a really good album. Kind of "modern country" songs(for lack of a better description) but done really well. Pete once told me he didn't like what they did with his sound on the mix but I think he still played, and sounded just great. Just my two cents.

Pete,
I just yesterday picked up Earle's "The Good Life". My first encounter with him....like it. And like your work on the CD.
