Music Row Magazine is a Nashville music industry publication. Every year Music Row honors the accomplishments of Nashville session musicians by rating them according to the number of Billboard Country Top Ten albums they have played on. The categories are for Bass, Drums, Guitar, Fiddle, Keyboards, Steel, Vocals and Engineer. An appearance on a Top Ten album earns one credit. Albums eligible this year entered the Top 10 Billboard Country Chart between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008.

The winners in the Steel Guitar category are as follows:

Paul Franklin - 18 (Top Ten Albums)
Dan Dugmore - 16
Russ Pahl - 8
Mike Johnson - 4

It's interesting to note that Franklin has won the steel category every year since 1994 except for 2007 when Dan Dugmore won. Also interesting to note is the steel player who played on the #1 Top Ten Album, Brad Paisley's "5th Gear," was not any of the above. It was Paisley's outstanding road & session player: Randall Currie.

I'd like to correct my previous post: '08 Music Row Musician Awards: I stated Brad Paisley's "5th Gear" album was the #1 Top Ten Album of 2008. It was not - "5th Gear" just happened to be first on Music Row's list of 2008 Top Ten Albums and I assumed it was the top seller. Sorry - too much multi-tasking for me today!

Seems like Russ Pahl is kind of the "stealth" guy on that list, it seems to me that you don't see as much mention of him here as the other guys, which is too bad. He sure plays some great stuff, a very creative guy (great guitar player too, and pretty much anything with frets).

And he managed to play on all those hit CDs last year, and still tour with Vince Gill! Not bad!

Thanks for posting that, Robert...

Both Paul and Dan are doing steel and lap steel on my buddies tracks. Be listening
for Jonathon Singleton as an artist. He is also a writer on Airplanes recorded by
Gary Allan. The tracks and the vocals are very cool.
