This song is based on the Carl Smith version with some of Big Jim Murphy's and some of Chalker's riffs thrown in. The C6 parts are recorded with a condenser mic and the E9th parts with a Shure SM-57 both in front of a Fender Steel King amp.
The drums were painstakingly programmed on a Boss DR-880. All the other instruments are real. The lead guitar was played on a Schecter 7 String. The rhythm track is done and I'll post that with some tab later this week hopefully.

Great tune, good job!
I was just talking to Russ Blake (another forumite) about this tune on Sunday evening. I recently bought a sealed copy of Carl Smith's 20th Anniversary double album off Ebay, from which this song is taken. It has about 15 tunes....all Murph and all C neck except (for one or two tunes).
This is the album that made me buy a guitar w/ a C6th neck. |

Greg, Are you going to tab this out. One of my favorite songs. I sure would be interested in all the steel tab if you decide to do it
Thanks

Tony, I'll have to hunt down a copy of that album. I normally do this song a little slower with a bit of delay for a fatter tone. But as you say after hearing the swing version, it's hard to go back to the straight country version.
Larry, Larry, Larry, I was trying to decide which parts of this to tab, all E9th or all C6th or just selected riffs. Let me know your preference! I used the C to C# raise on the 3rd string on C6th as well as the A to Bb raise and the C to B lower. You can easily play this without the C to C# raise. On E9th I used the 9th string D to C# lower a bit to get the "Night Life" turn around.

Wow! Searched all over and found a copy on ebay in pretty good shape and bought it. Thanks for the tip!
Larry, you are not allowed to throw in the towel! None of us are. We must all suffer in this hobby together. And that includes getting blown out of the water by superpickers like Murph.

Greg, In my humble opinion, I would be excited to have both C6 and E9 TABS. I have the C to C# change on my steel as well as the D to C# on the E9. I know thats a lot of work but it sure would be nice
Regard

Greg Missed the other changes. I also have the A to Bb raise and the C to B lower on the C6. Looking forward to what ever you decide
Thanks

Thanks Andy! I've got a gospel song in the works then I'm off to the SuperSlide stuff which will be 12 strings.
Larry, I will attempt to post 100% of the tab. There are some slurs and slides that will be hard to represent in tab but I'll give it a go.
For thse that want it early, here is the chord chart that I used for the drum patterns and the rhythm track:

For those of you that don't make it to the tab section too often, the complete set of E9th and C6th tab is now posted in the tab section.

Greg, this is a fantastic performance. I really enjoyed your picking, but mostly the C-6th side. Sounds very up front and authoritive. |

Roger, good thing my nervous playing habits don't show up when I record. The compact body of the later model steels seems to suit my playing a lot and gives be a bit more control over the beast.
Tony, my fleaBay bought Carl Smith double LP album set arrived today in good condition. Can't wait to get it in to wma's. Thanks again the for tip.

Greg-Nice picking. Of course, I favor the C6, as you know. But you did a real nice swinging job on E9th too. Good stuff...al. _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.
