I watched the entire two hour season premiere of the show last night and was sadly disappointed, there was no continuity;The camera jumped from audition locales to the final twelve in two hours with various pieces thrown in. In previous years I thought the show was pretty good: it had a formula and I thought for what it was it was a workable format. Now they have tried to assimilate the American Idol show complete with crying contestants and tortured shots of the contestant's families. As for the three judges the cromagnon guy on the end with the surfer haircut was appropriating Randys "pitchey dog" persona while Diminutive and Destitute seems to think he is the heir apparent to Owen Bradley. Jewel who is really a folksinger posing as a pop singer and now a country singer seems the least offensive...It was a nice show what the heck happened?

I think the blonde haired guy is Jeff Steele, former member of Boy Howdy, writer of a lot of good tunes and a guy with lots of credentials and credability.
That said, I did not watch much of the show.

I watched and agreed with Jeffrey on the pitchy singing.
I was surprised Jewel disagreed with him. I was surprised too, that it was on CBS this season it might bring more viewers. I hope the band will be seen more and the steel needs to be UP! Smile

I think Pat Severs is playin' steel in the house band for Nashville Star-he did in the past few years. They did show a lady on fiddle, and I think it was Megan Mullins, a singer who plays more than one instrument.

I only watched it once last year. The one I liked best was Melanie Torres. She came out second in the finals.
We did a private party with her and her band a few weeks ago and she's very nice, very talented and pretty. She said she doesn't listen to country music much and didn't know who Johnny Rodriguez is or some of the others I mentioned. Still she was very nice, maybe just a little young.

I had it on last night as "backround noise" while I was on the computer (can not see the TV from my computer). What I heard was really pathetic. I definately won't have it on again.

the first season was excellent.It gave us Buddy Jewel and Miranda Lambert.

After that , it became more about the HOSTS and the JUDGES and they got farther and farther away from anything related to a singing competition.

We tried to watch the second season and even some of the 3rd season..

We switched to King of Queens , it is supposed to be a comedy !

So, who again were the recent show winners and what are they doing now ?

I have my TV on a mixer input and I was practicing, so I more or less "saw" the whole thing. It seemed really clear to me that they had selected a group of contestants based on pre-defined "characters" who would make for a dramatic TV show, and to fulfill certain demographics. I mean, the male model can't sing - at all - he's there so that people can vote him off and feel good about themselves for overlooking superficial "beauty." Ditto for the gorgeous woman who did that weird popeye cartoon-lady performance. Out of all the thousands of applicants.... Whoa!

They have the requisite fat lady doing the Gretchen, so that fat people can feel good about themselves, even though she wouldn't stand a chance at getting a contract in Nashville these days, which is what the show is supposedly about. Wynona Judd didn't start out that way. The Navy guy can't sing either, but he's there so that we can feel good about supporting the troops. There was a giveaway when they were conducting auditions on the aircraft carrier and the announcer kept praising the "quality" of the talent, all while they were warbling and howling away in the background. It has nothing to do with supporting the troops, it has to do with wanting something to be true, declaring it to be true, then convincing yourself that these people must be talented... jeesh! I did find myself wondering how the Navy guy gets to skate out on his military duty to go play around on a reality show, though. I can see how John Wayne and Ronald Reagan stayed out of the military draft in WWII, they were doing Army training films and playing movie roles providing a psychological boost, no different than what military PR types have always done. However, this guy is already an engineer in the navy, aren't the taxpayers paying him to keep the boats afloat? The guy even said that he has to win, otherwise he'll have to go back to his "day job." Isn't hardship leave usually for family funerals, not fake talent shows? Alien

Hey. One of the hosts and one of the finalists are my neighbors in town! Billy Ray and Pearl Heart. Even still, I can't stand these shows. If they had a show where contestants ran their fingernails accross a blackboard for an hour, it would be slightly less annoying than most of the "reality" shows.
