Austin City Limits, 1977. (or so!)
Saw a show featuring Roger Miller and his band...what a line-up. his drummer and bass player were "Double Trouble", (Of Stevie Ray fame.)
and his lead guitarist was Danny Gatton.
Great band and Roger was fun to watch.  |

Jack, I've got a video tape of that show. I'd heard that Roger was an accomplished fiddler but had never heard him until that show. He was a fine swing style fiddle player IMHO. Also, Danny Gatton could really do some pedal steel stuff on that Tele....JH in Va.

| Danny played some steel on his "Redneck Jazz" album. Despite the album title, he only plays steel on country-type tunes. This is the album on which "Rock Candy" first appears, with Buddy Emmons on steel. The way I've heard it, encountering and playing with Buddy made Gatton decide to drop trying to play steel himself. Not surprising, perhaps, in one way, but on the other hand with Danny's fabled effortless facility at learning instruments if he had persisted he would most likely have become very proficient. |

I've never heard him play pedal steel but he had a nice touch on lapsteel. On his CD "88 Elmira Street" he does an instrumental on lapsteel of the old Beach Boys tune "In My Room" which is pretty cool.......JH in Va.

I heard him play steel quite a bit; he had a D-10 Emmons, and played with flatpick and 2nd and 3rd fingers without fingerpicks (just like he played guitar).
He played some cool stuff on steel, but told me when he quit that he couldn't give it the time it would need to do it justice. Obviously from his guitar playing he had pretty high standards! |
