The other night, I caught one of the old Porter Wagoner shows, I guess from the mid-70's. They were broadcasting from an outdoor stage at Opryland. The Waggoneers were all wearing the deep red suits, and there was a second guitarist that had a big, bushy beard and pony tail. He was wearing a powder blue jacket an matching funny hat. They gave him a solo one one song, and he really tore it up on his Les Paul.
Anybody know who he is/was?

Who was it who said that using a Les Paul to play country music was "communist?"

Bill- that's the very video I had in mind. I think that I saw Grady playing a black Les Paul too.

Don't know who the bearded player is , but he was on several of Porter's shows. I recall one that Porter did one of those songs that were almost too fast for the fiddle player, and when they handed it to the bearded guitar player, he smoked it big time. Then they handed it to Stu Basore and he burned the barn down with his solo. Those were great shows. Jody.

Could it have been Buck Trent coming back for some appearances after he left the group? He did have a beard at one time.

I had tivo'd the show, and just watched it, and it is Jimmy Colvard. He was on quite a few of the "Opryland" episodes. Looks like he wore the wrong colored outfit that day.

Mikey! Evidently so, Jimmy left us in 1977 I'm sure I knew Jimmy as well as anyone, He was the first guitar player I worked with, way back in 58 here in Mn, Jimmy got me my only Nashville session in 69 at Cedarwood with a guy named Cecil Null, why do you suppose I remember that name? Take Care!
