I guess everyone in the steel world knows who Ralph Mooney is.
I have another thread running in the Extended Families where I enquired If anyone had info on Mr Moon,I cannot believe that no one can give us an update on His health.
I am(to say the least) a bit disappointed.
Can anyone restore My faith in humanity?
Please.

Hi Billy,
The last I heard Ralph was doing better. Like all of us, sooner or later time is catching up with us. So he has had to slow down.
Ralph is a great guy and I'm sure he would like to hear from you here is a address where you may write and correspond with Ralph. Send him a card.

Moon would say,"Howdy"! so I'll say it for him, Howdy! Let me apologize to all for not posting about Moon and Larry's health, my puter has been down and it just won't get up.I'm only home on weekends and not everyone of those so I have legit reason,I think.
First Larry had the surgery and is at home recoopun. He phoned the other morning and was his onry butt self so I know he is feeling much better. As for the Moon he is well.Fat and sassy and I mean both of those things! He is staying pretty close to home and while he hasn't said so I think Miz Moon has placed him on house arrest.Ya'all know that when the warden speaks we do as we're told. Regards, Fred |

Quite recently here, we learned that not all gospel steel players even know who Buddy Emmons is, so I think the odds are very small indeed that every steeler's heard of Moon!
Ralph's one of my biggest influences, sound-wise, and I only wish that he had done more straight Nashville-style stuff before he veered into what is now considered his rather unique "trademark" sound. |

Ralph played steel for Waylon Jennings for many years. He played steel on Waylon's song "Rainy Day Woman".

Billy, when I saw your topic "WHO IS RALPH MOONEY?" it kinda floored me. To be blunt it's just about the same thing as asking a Christian "Who is Jesus Christ"...... To me, Ralph is the "high guru" of steel guitar and always will be. He's the ultimate country player and one who's playing can be picked out of the rest as he sounds like no one except himself............JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Ralph got my attention the first time I heard him with Buck Owens; man I couldn't get enough. IMO, those initial licks of his sold Buck's music big time. |

Jerry, Thats what I thought.I almost didn't even check the post because how do you tell someone who R.M. is.I remember years ago when I left So. Cal I went to Colorado and would mention Jimmy Bryant or R.M. and receive blank stares.I gave it up.To me if you have to give a mans pedigree when speaking of them it just doesn't mean that much. Also I certainly agree that R.M. steel made Bucks music. It was a winning combination! Along with Skeets, Johnny and joni, Wynn, Buck, Merle, Waylon, Geo Hamilton and a 1000 other artists. I really enjoy his and James Burtons recording also. He has a CD now that he and Mike Headrick did about a year ago that I really enjoy also. |

Jerry,Fred and anyone else who is wondering.
My reason for the title of the post was to get attention. You will notice I mentioned an earlier post in which I asked for an update on Mr Moon's health. that thread had been read by about 750 people
and there was not(at that time)any answers to My question.
I was quite upset to think that nobody nowhere nohow knew anything about Ralph.
I have loved the Man and His music since the early days and was concerned for His wellbeing.
I am happy to say that there is a reply on the other post in Extended Families which tells Me that Mooney is doing well.
Best regards
Billy |

I hope Ralph is alright...
His style always came across to ME as " Im gonna pick the Puddin out of this tune, and I DARE you to try to Stop me !!"
He is another who "Made" the artist he played with !

I think it's so cool that Ralph co-wrote "Crazy Arms". _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Chris, although Chuck Seals is listed as one of the writers of "Crazy Arms", I don't believe he wrote one word of it. I don't know if he's still alive or not but he was a small time promoter and used to sit in with us and sing a couple of tunes ever now and then when I was at the DJ Ranch in No. Long Beach in the early eighties. I'm not sure, but I think he might have gotten a piece of the tune in exchange for getting it placed with Ray Price.......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry, I guess that was common practice years ago, albeit a weird one. I would think it embarrassing to have my name on something I didn't write, even if it did mean royalties. I heard of DJ's having their name on stuff, to ensure air play. Wild times.
So Ralph probably wrote it all? Very nice. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Moon did in fact write Crazy Arms all by his lonesome. He did tell Chuck that he would give him half to do "something" with it.Chuck placed it with Jimmy Wakeley's publishing unknown to Moon. When Ray cut it Moon had to pay off Wakeley to prevent lawsuit. I think Moon said about $700. Chuck Seals has received half of that song.Hows that for a gift? |

Fred is spot on, although the amount.. I'm not sure of either.
Chuck wrote 0.00% of the song.
Someone recorded it before Price, an Okie singer, and maybe even a west coast guy..can't recall, but I think Chuck got the co-credit as part of the deal, before Moon knew more about publishing and royalties. |
