If you read the lower part of this, they get into the problems of over compressing music. I've noticed that the music recorded on DVD movies in Dolby Digital is pretty spectacular in terms of dynamic range.

A great organization and website:

Dedicated to reversing the loudness trend. Well worth a look.

Thanks for posting that link, good to see the start of an organized reaction to the loudness war that's been going on for the last 15 years.

It sounds like this bunch is not approaching the loudness, compression issues as much as the actual quality of the sound, as determined by the amount of bytes you use to transmit the music and how efficiently you encode them.

I sure hope they're successful. I have my TV wired into a mixer so I can practice with headphones while it's on, and some of the sound quality is awful. I was trying to watch the American Idol finals, and all the singers sounded really raspy - all the pianos sounded raspy, all the guitars sounded raspy too. I don't know if it's the signal from Hollywood, Comcast, our local Fox affiliate, but is was cheap, tinny music - irrespective of the content. They're just cutting too many corners in the amount of information sent. So far, the PBS Austin City Limits and all sound O.K., but the overall standards for "acceptable tone" seem to be plummeting.

Kids are growing up listening to cheap tone, and they'll just never know better I guess. It's sort of like those horrid, plasticky piezo "acoustic" guitars on the Grand New Opry - people's ears have gotten beaten down, and they've just forgotten how pleasant a miked guitar can sound. Dave Matthews probably thinks he has good tone.... Whoa!
