Greg Leisz

Post by Greg Simmons »

Been listening to some stuff featuring Greg Leisz lately :D ...his superb (as always) musical fingerprint can be found on Mark Olson’s latest CD “The Salvation Blues” and Joe Henry’s new album “Civilians” - some brilliant lap steel on the song “You Can't Fail Me Now” - hear it here:

It's great to see so much attention given to Greg Leisz here on the forum: a miraculous musician getting the steel in its many forms -- acoustic, resonator, lap and pedal-- out in front of people day after day.

I really like his playing on the Bill Frisell albums 'Good Dog, Happy Man' & 'The Intercontinentals'.

Ditto on those Frisell albums. He's also got some nice stuff on Gillian Welch's Soul Journey album.

Just got the new Joni Mitchell CD "Shine" with Greg adding some very tasteful pedal steel on about 5 tracks :D

Greg Liesz is one of my favorite steel players, he sounds awesome when he plays with Tiger Army.
He is one of my major insipations and a major reason why I decided to take up pedal steel myself.

Currently touring with Bill Frisell, playing dates as part of his Disfarmer shows. Trio - Frisell, Leisz, and Jenny Scheinman on violin. Wonderful stuff. I caught them in Chicago a few months back, sat front row. Amazing show.

Although I'd been aware of PSG on numerous records over the years it was actually Greg's playing on seminal 90's records by people like KD lang and Matthew Sweet at a time I wasn't listening to country but playing in Alternative rock bands that made me really fall in love with the instrument and aspire to own and play one.

He's a wonderful supportive player behind a vocalist, beautiful intonation and tone too.

What guitars is Greg normally playing? I believe he uses an extended E9?

Agreed! That trio just played here in a great small theater, with the wonderful addition of our own Victor Krauss on bass. Incredible music, impossible to categorize. I've seen Bill several times, and Greg many times but never together and the CDs they've done together I listen to as much as anything I own.

Greg was playing a Williams (S-12?), a Scheerhorn resonator, and mandolin...

Here's a dumb question - what is the correct pronunciation of Greg's last name?

It's pronounced to rhyme with the word "lease".

It's supposed to be a silent "z" at the end?

I always leaned toward "Leesz," still getting a little of that "z" sound in there...
