My AV (BitDefender) has the capability to cleanup my pc's registry. Would I be making a mistake to use the BitDefender Registry tool?

Make sure it offers to make a backup of all changes it makes, so you can restore items that it breaks. They all break something at one time or another, especially regarding orphaned file associations.

I use a registry edit program called Uniblue. I have not had any problems and it does ask if you want a backup copy. It works well in cleaning up the registry.

There is a lot of discussion on Registry "cleaners" and many "techies" say that it really is not needed. If there is a registry entry that is causing actual problems that's different but in 99% of the cases what is in the registry has no affect on PC performance.

I've also fixed PC's that were "cleaned/repaired" with a Registry program.

A registry entry that is not being used is similar to a "rem" (remark) or "no op" (no operation) statment in a program - it does nothing when the program is executed.
