| I want to replace the tone pots on an old Gibson Consolette. The guitar has been refinished and not all original anyway, want that boo-wah sound. Doesn't have it. Does anyone know what kind of pot I should get and where to buy? Thank you. TC |

I know less about this technical electronic stuff than most here on the Forum...........but
JERRY BYRD used 500 Meg, audio taper for his guitar tone control.
JERRY BYRD used a Type A-B, Audio Taper 0.25 Meg pot for his foot pedal.

If you want the Fender-Type quick tone-change, try a 1 Meg Linear-Taper Pot. with an .05 cap. (or .047). [Cap. available from Radio Shack.] This is what Fender used in their Dual~Pro and T–8 Customs: Volume = 250K Audio
Tone = 1Meg. Linear w/.05 cap.

| Thanks! Went to RS and got the pot.(entiometer). Will install when electronics buddy gets over with solder gun. I should be boo-wahing in no time! |

| Hey Steve! Yeah, I took my steel to a long time local guitar repair shop. I'm not ready to solder stuff just yet.At first I had a time explaining just what a "boo wah" effect was. They are old 60's rockers not really into old country and western swing. But after a while they explained in technical terms the reason certain tone pots do this. If I remember right you'll want a 500k pot with sharp throw or cutoff instead of gradual. I may have it backwards. If you want I'll call them tomorrow if someone doesn't chime in and correct me. If you take it somewhere you trust, they should know the type of pot you need. My guys nailed it and now I can boo-wah all day! I would be lost without my D-8. I play it out much more than my pedal rig. Just so practical to take around, works better with the kinds of band I play in anyway. I only play pedal in one group. I am still very much a steel guitar intern. Never had so much fun, or been in so much demand! I play in local original type groups, no big pay gigs. For me a lot more fun playing music you want to play, vs music you have to play. Thank God for the forum and the Steel guitar! |

Thanks Tom! If you dont mind calling him I would appreciate it, but you may be able to just look underneath at the pot and see the markings on the back of it. If you end up calling the guy ask him about the capacitor as well. I would imagine a quick taper would be better like you said. Audio taper I believe is slow on at first, then increases in a curved line. I think for boowah a linear taper would be best (my guess). Do you like the effect you have been getting with it? I want to build a little switch box that will let me add it in the chain just for the songs I need. Thanks again!

Steve, you are correct in that a linear taper (B) pot will have a faster fall off to the human ear.
Audio taper compensates to follow what our hearing perceives as output levels.
On pot values, the lower the resistance, the less high frequencies are let through. For instance, a 500k will start brighter than a 250k pot.
For caps, the higher the cap value, the more high frequency is bled to ground. For example, a .022uf cap is brighter than a .047uf cap.
If you are building an external box, you may have to experiment a bit to find what you like best and interacts well with the onboard guitar electronics.
