When I read any forum page, and then click to view a Youtube offering, after listening/watching Youtube, I X out at top right to return to the Forum page that I was reading. Unfortunately, when I X out, it goes to a blank page telling me it has to shut down. When I click on the "send" or the "don't send notice" it takes me completly off the Forum back to my home page thus making me reclick the Forum icon to get back to continue reading. [This also happens on other sites, not just the Forum. Very frustating to say the least. Fred [/u] |

When did this start occuring? Have you recently upgraded your OS (what is your OS?), or service pack level? Are you talking about Internet Exploder when you say you X out of it? If so, what version of IE? Is the Send/Don't send an error report to Microsoft? _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Jack, Wiz and bob:
Being somewhat computer technically illiterate, I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
1. Jack & Wiz: Operating System - Windows XP.[Installed 4 years ago.]
2. Jack: Browser - Internet Explorer Version 7. [Just updated last Wednesday.]
3a. Wiz: Yes, when I X out of IE
3b. Yes, the "Send/Don't send" error report in to Microsoft. [I've done this at least 15 times with NO results.]
3c. The problem started a month ago.
4. bob: Regarding Flash plug-in. A few years ago I installed Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0. Last week I tried to update it to version 8.1, but before it was completely installed a notice flashed-up saying "The feature you are using is on a network resource that is unavailable.....Error 1714. The older version of Adobe cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." So, I went to the "Tech Note" page and followed all instructions to the letter with NO results.
Could the two problems above be related?
Gentlemen: Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. If you prefer to email or pm me so not to tie-up the Forum, please do so. Respectfully, Fred |

Flash is not related to Acrobat Reader. Acrobat is for PDF files. Flash is for animations, video and sound. The two programs do not interact.

Searching Usenet (using Google Groups for example) for Error 1714, we see that error 1714 is not just Adobe related, but comes up with many programs when users try to install a new version without uninstalling the old one first.
So look around the newsgroups and youwill find stuff like this which may help:
Quote: |
From Adobe's website:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=320310
Error "The feature... is on a network resource that is unavailable"
or "Error 1714" when you update or install Acrobat 6.x, 7.x, 3D, 8 or
Adobe Reader (on Windows)
Issue
When you install Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader, the installer returns
one of the following error messages:
-- "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a
folder containing the installation package 'Adobe [product] .msi' in
the box below."
-- "Error 1714. The older version of Adobe [product] cannot be
removed. Contact your technical support group."
Solutions
Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Browse to the original installation .msi file for the
application you are trying to install or update.
1. In the error dialog box, click Browse.
2. Navigate to the original installation files for your product
version and choose the .msi file.
Solution 2: Remove all previous versions of Acrobat and Adobe Reader,
and then install the application.
1. Choose Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open text box, and then
click OK to open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box.
2. Select Acrobat or Adobe Reader and click Remove.
3. When prompted, confirm that you want to remove the selected
application.
4. Repeat the above procedure for all installed versions of Acrobat
and Adobe Reader.
5. Restart the computer, and then install the application.
Solution 3: Attempt to repair Acrobat from the installation disc or
cached installer files.
Important: If you do not have the cached installer files, and you have
a downloaded version of Acrobat, you must download the installer
again. This information also applies to the tryout edition of Acrobat.
To repair Acrobat:
1. Insert the Acrobat disc, locate the downloaded installer package,
or navigate to the cached installer files.
Note: By default, the cached installer files are located at x:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files. If the cached installer files are
not available, you must use the original media.
2. Start the installation again from this location.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions, and choose to Remove Acrobat.
4. Complete the onscreen instructions.
Solution 4: Run the Microsoft Clean Up utility before you install
Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
Warning: The Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up utility only removes
registry entries created by the application installer. Files and other
registry entries for the application are not removed by this utility
and could cause inadvertent effects on the system if not removed. If
you use this utility, you may have to reinstall other programs that
use MSI (Microsoft installer). Caution is advised. Read information
about the utility on the Microsoft website at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 .
1. Download and install the Windows Install Clean Up utility.
a. Visit the Microsoft website at http://support.microsoft.com and
search for msicuu2.exe.
b. Select the article "You receive the 'This patch package could not
be opened' error message in an Office program."
c. Click the link for the msicuu2.exe utility under Resolution Step 1.
d. Save the utility to your desktop.
e. Double-click msicuu2.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.
2. Identify the version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader that is causing the
issue and correctly remove it from the system using the following
steps.
-- If the error is generated by the current version of Acrobat or
Adobe Reader:
1. Remove all updates that do not generate an error message.
2. Choose Start > Program > Windows Install Clean Up to start the
Windows Install Clean Up utility.
3. Select the current version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader and choose
Remove.
4. Reinstall the current version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
5. Apply any updates.
Note: If the current version generates another error message upon
removal, refer to the documentation on that issue.
-- If the error is generated when an earlier version of Acrobat or
Adobe Reader prevents the installation of the current version of
Acrobat or Adobe Reader:
Important: These steps require the installation media and serial
number for both versions of Acrobat.
1. Remove all updates that do not generate an error message.
2. Choose Start > Program > Windows Install Clean Up to start the
Windows Install Clean Up utility.
3. Select the previous version of the application and choose Remove.
4. Re-install the previous version of the application.
5. Remove the previous version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader using Add/
Remove Programs, and then restart your computer.
Note: If the previous version generates another error message upon
removal, refer to the documentation on that issue.
6. Install the current version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
Background information
Acrobat Professional, Acrobat Standard, and Adobe Reader 6 were the
first members of the Acrobat family to implement MSI (Microsoft
Installer). Acrobat uses registry keys to store the installation path
information. If the registry keys become damaged, this error can be
generated.
Product versions affected
Acrobat 3D, Acrobat Professional 6.0, Acrobat Professional 7.0,
Acrobat Professional 8.0, Acrobat Standard 6.0, Acrobat Standard 7.0,
Acrobat Standard 8.0, Adobe Reader 6.0, Adobe Reader 7.0, Adobe Reader
8.0

True, Adobe Acrobat 9 allows people to embed Flash objects in PDF documents. But YouTube sends SWF (Flash movies), not PDF files. I don't see any way that Adobe Acrobat (or Adobe Reader) could be related to Fred's problem.
Here's a link to the Flash Player uninstaller:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2
Download the uninstaller, close your web browser, run the uninstaller, reboot, and then install the newer version of Flash that I linked to earlier. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Since the problem started before you upgraded to IE 7 we can safely guess that you were using IE 6.0, which shipped with Windows XP. Your problems are causing IE to crash and the error report sent to MS is simply reporting the fact that this occurred, with technical details mere mortals cannot understand. If you are waiting for MS to "get back with you" regarding your error reports - you will grow old and die before this happens.
Let me offer you some acquired knowledge that may help resolve your issues with the browser crashing and Flash not working.
In my years of experience as a computer troubleshooter I have come to learn that browser crashes, in any browser, are usually caused by third party extensions, plug-ins and toolbars. In a few cases the actual browser executable or its associated .dll files got corrupted, but in most cases it is third party extensions, adware, spyware, or browser hijackers that cause crashes.
Here is what you can do now to begin to troubleshoot the crashes in Internet Explorer 7. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > "Internet Options" (this icon may be inside the "Network and Internet Connections" section depending on your CP view settings). When you double-click on Internet Options the Internet Properties sheet will open. Make the following changes, click Apply, then OK. Print this out as a reference as you will have to close your browser to troubleshoot it.
- Close all open Internet Explorer browser windows.
- Click on the "Programs" tab of "Internet Properties."
- Click on the button; "Manage add-ons."
- Make sure the top option field is set to Show: "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer."
- Hold you pointer over the field label "Publisher" and click once on it, to sort by publisher.
- Click once on every item that is not signed by Microsoft then go down and change the operating "Settings" to "Disable," for each non-MS add-on.
- When you have disabled all non-Microsoft add-ons click Apply.
- Next, click on the "Advanced" tab of Internet Properties.
- Look under the "Browsing" section for the entry labeled: "Enable third party browser extensions" and uncheck it.
- Scroll down to the "Security" section and place a checkmark in the option labeled: "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed"
- Click Apply, then OK, to close the Internet Options sheet.
Phase two: Get Spybot Search and Destroy.
- Open Internet Explorer again and stop whatever page is trying to load, by clicking on the Stop sign button, next to the address field.
- Type in the URL: http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html, find the mirror site section labeled: "Hosted by Safer-Networking" and click on one of the "Download Here" buttons for Safer-Networking Ltd. Spybot Search and Destroy will begin downloading. When the download options box appears make sure it is set to download to your desktop and not close after the download is complete.
- When the Spybot S&D download from spybot.info/safer-networking.com has completed click on RUN. to begin installation.
- Accept the license, making sure you see the words: "This is dedicated to the most wonderful girl on earth" and the author's name: Patrick M. Kolla.
- Select the option to update immediately, then accept the default installation options and proceed.
- When installation has completed reboot. When you log back in to your desktop you will see two icons for Spybot Search and Destroy. One is the installer that you downloaded, which you can move to your preferred downloads folder. The other is simply labeled: "Spybot - Search & Destroy" and is the program launcher. There are other shortcuts to the program on your Start Menu > Programs, in the Spybot - Search & Destroy folder. One of them is labeled "Update Spybot-S&D." Click on that shortcut, in your Start Menu > Programs. The Spybot updater module will launch.
- Click on the "Search" button
- A new page will appear with a list of download locations. Choose one of the three Safer-Networking locations (1,2,3), then click "Continue."
- If any updates are displayed place a checkmark in all of them.
- Click the "Download" button.
- If you get a red X for any update you will have to go back and try a different download location, as the file is corrupt, or out of date. Otherwise they will all show green checkmark images.
- When all available updates have been successfully downloaded click on the Exit button to close the Updater module.
- Now open Spybot S&D from the desktop or Quick Launch icon.
- Press the Immunize button, on the left side and wait for all items to load. Right click in the list and choose "Select All" with the left mouse button.
- Now click on the "Immunize" button, with the green plus sign. Wait for the report to show "0 unprotected."
- Next, click on the "Search and Destroy" button, on the left side.
- Close all open browsers now. Close any open applications that have windows open.
- Press the button labeled "Check for problems" and go have lunch, or practice playing steel.
- After a while Spybot will finish checking for problems and will provide a list of all malware and cookies it found. Look through the list to see if there are any items selected that are legitimate, like cookies for the forums you visit, or web sites you have to log into. Right click on any desirable cookies, or programs who want to keep active and select "Exclude this product from further detection." Those items will not be removed during the next step.
- When you are ready to proceed click on the button: "Fix selected problems."
- Some running hostile processes may not quit willingly and Spybot S&D will pop up a notice asking if you want it to run before Windows loads, next time you reboot. Select Yes or OK to schedule this follow-up scan.
- If any major threats appear in the list of found items (rootkits, keyloggers, backdoors, downloaders, dialers, Trojans) you may have to disable System Restore to completely remove them, but we'll wait and see.
- Go to Start > Shutdown > Restart, to reboot. As the Windows Desktop begins to load it will be intercepted by Spybot S&D, which will run another complete scan for problems. This time it will remove threats that could not be removed during the previous scan.
- Reboot as soon as your desktop loads.
- When you are back in Windows open Spybot again and run another scan. If any of the same malware items return they might have been backed up in your hidden System Restore folder. If so, you must turn off System Restore and scan again.
- To turn off System Restore, right click on My Computer and choose Properties > System Restore. Place a check in the option box to Turn off System Restore and click Apply. Accept the warning box and wait for the contents to be dumped.
- After you have scanned for malware with Spybot S&D and your preferred virus scanner, and all is clean, turn System Restore back on, by returning to the System Restore tab in My Computer > Properties, unchecking the option to turn it off and Applying it.
We will deal with the Flash plug-in and Adobe Reader problems later, after you give a report that all malware items have been removed. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I still don't think that Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader are related to this problem, but they both can be uninstalled easily with the "Add or Remove Programs" utility. It can be found under Start/Settings/Control Panel.
I'm sorry that mentioning Adobe Flash caused all of this confusion. Adobe makes many products. YouTube depends on Adobe Flash to play its videos. It's the first thing I would suspect if I was having problems with YouTube running correctly in my browser.
YouTube doesn't use Adobe Reader (formerly called Adobe Acrobat Reader). If you are having a problem with PDF files, you should delete the version that you have and download the latest. It won't fix your YouTube problem, though. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Problem:
Adobe Reader 4.x cannot be uninstalled and the new version (8.1.2) cannot be installed.
Possible causes:
There is a portion of Adobe Acrobat Reader operating in memory as a background process and the upgrader cannot stop this old module.
Solutions:
- Browse to http://www.adobe.com and download the full Adobe Reader setup file to your desktop, by clicking on the button labeled "Get Adobe Reader".
- Reboot your computer into safe mode by tapping F8 during the boot process, until you get the boot options that have Safe Mode at the top of a list. Highlight Safe Mode, using your up arrow key, then press the Enter key.
- When the Windows Welcome Screen appears log into your usual named account.
- Accept the notice about being in Safe Mode, by pressing the Enter key when the notice appears, or by clicking on OK.
- Click on the Start Button, then Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Adobe (Acrobat) Reader (version number) >> "Remove" Button. Accept that you wish to completely uninstall the program and all associated files and folders. If asked about removing possibly shared files, say Yes to All.
- When Adobe Reader has finished uninstalling you can also uninstall Adobe Flash Player, if it is in the list of installed programs. This will make it easier to update to the newest version in normal Windows, as it won't exist to be running as a background process, if that was happening.
- Now find the Adobe Reader (8.1.2) setup file that you downloaded to your Windows Desktop (for the same identity) and double click to begin the installation.
- If the installer cannot run in safe mode you should reboot into normal Windows and run it from there. With the previous version uninstalled you should be able to install the new version.
- Assuming you can install the new version in Safe Mode, after it completes you can Shutdown and Restart, back into normal Windows.
Regarding Flash Player, you can upgrade to the current version by visiting www.adobe.com again and clicking on the "Get Adobe Flash Player" button, then follow the instructions for each browser brand you have (Flash is different for various browsers).
Let me know if this works for you. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
