I am currently using a Roland Sound Canvas, model SC55-ST, MIDI sound generator with Band-In_A-Box on my computer. I have had this thing since it was new (probably 10 years) and am looking to upgrade to get better sounds from the PA.
Any suggestions on what to replace it with?

Jim,
I play back my BIAB tracks with an Edirol unit. I forget the model number but I get excellent results and it supports GM II.

Musicians!
Personally, I find the Roland Sound Canvas to be pretty darn good. It probably sounds lackluster in your rig because BIAB doesn't vary the dynamics of MIDI output very well.
I think that the Edirol Studio Canvas is actually a Roland Sound Canvas under the hood. Search for sound module at Musicians Friend to get an idea of what's out there. The Roland SonicCell looks like it would be pretty cool. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Bob, I'll look at that info.
Erv, when you get the model number let me know. How old is it?

The current Roland VSC is VSC33 that PG Music supplies with some BIAB packages.
However, I use the hardware synths that are on my SoundBlaster Audigy sound card - much better than the Roland software synths.
Roy Ayres uses an external Roland MIDI unit but I don't now what model it is. He does a "one man" show using BIAB/the Roland MIDI Synth into the P.A. and his steel.
The worst MIDI synth is the built in Windows, Microsoft GS Wavetable synth. |

Jim,
My unit is a few years old. It came with ears so I could rack mount it.
It wasn't cheap, I bought it over the internet.
It was an Edirol Model SD80.
Maybe you can find a used one. It has been discontinued.
