Does anyone know when the volume pedal became a standard piece of equipment for pedal steel and/or who started the trend?

| What an excellent question. I'm sure curious. I think I've seen some old clips with players grabbing volume knobs on console steels with their fingers in the 1940s. |

Paul Bigsby was offering them as a part of his equipment catalog in the early 1950's.
I had a DeArmond with changeable VIBRATO.... They were hot into the retro-fit standard guitar pickups.
JERRY BYRD made his own and I'm sure it was prior to either of the above. |

Ray thanks for the good start. I'd love to hear a vibrato volume pedal! I always loved vibrato on steel ala nightlife, and wondered why it never really caught on. It works great for B3 type sounds...

Volume pedals were in use by the late '30s, though probably not by a majority of players 'til the late '40s. It took a while for them to catch on, but once the majority of steels were consoles instead of laps, it was more or less a natural development for them to become standard equipment. Back then, as now, once one player is heard doing something different, or seen using something different, many others are bound to copy.

| When I bought my National D-8 console in 1947 I also bought a Nat. foot vol. control. It was all made of wood and had plastic gears that turned the pot, no strings , but it worked O. K. !! Eddie "C" ( the old non-pedal geezer ) |
