Topic: Good String For Pot Volume Pedals |

This may have been covered previously, but I don't have time to research the subject. Recently, an owner of a couple of old Bigsby volume & tone pedals sent them to me, feeling that they were too difficult to replace the pots in (and boy, was he correct). I discovered that someone in years past had replaced the string in one of them with a round, waxed shoestring. At first I thought, "How tacky." But, as I quickly surmised, that waxed shoe string was hard to slip on the shaft's spindle collar and such a string would surely last longer than anything I'd seen in pedals up to now.
Therefore, I'd like to pass this information along to all pot pedal owners who discover that their pedal string is worn out. About any store that sells shoestrings will have these waxed laces. So, good pedaling to all! ...Tom |

hey tom,
here's my two cents....i recently bought an old sho-bud pedal. the "string" on the pot that i had to replace looked mighty familiar to me...
old fly line. that is the plastic coated casting line for a fly rod. no slip. looks like it had been on there for years. seems to work just fine.

| My Sho-Bud volume pedal had plastic-coated string when I bought it, in 1984. When it eventually broke, I just replaced it with regular nylon cord, which is what I've used ever since, because I had no idea where to find the plastic-coated stuff (I don't fish!) Glad to find out after all these years. |

I'll chime in with what I use: the yellow construction cord. You can get a spool with 20 lifetime supplies for a couple bucks and it's always worked for me.

I use a fine braided nylon parachute cord. Very long lasting and no stretch.

Ah yes. And what would that be, pray tell? Has there in fact ever been a type of string that actually was made purposely for volume pedals? If so, which brand of volume pedal? The original string in my Sho-Bud pedal and the original strings in my Ernie Ball pedals are quite different, e.g.
Regardless of the answers to the above questions, what is the nature of the string(s) being referred to above as the "REAL THING"? |

| I use no. 6 level, floating, fly reel fishing line. It's a strong nylon with a kinda rubbrey/plastic coating that really gripss the pulley well. |

| I'm with Mr. Bradshaw on this one. I've found waxed dress shoe laces to be a great and inexpensive solution. It also doesn't require hacking up a fly line. Works for my Shobud pedal. |

The real thing is a special string made of nylon and pregnated with rosen, usually this string is die yellow. Lasts forever, (or two years, which ever comes first).
We have it in any legnth.

We have fixed many volume pedals that have come in here for repair and still do everyday, there is a lot of string that will work, most everything mentioned here will, however, I really recommend putting rosen in one form or another all over the string before installing it. I buy powered Rosen, but the fiddlers rosen block will work as long as you coat the string excessivly...  This prevents the string from coming unsecured, slipping on the pully and any knots from coming untied.

I just replaced the broken string in my Sho-Bud volume pedal with a waxed shoelace, and sure enough it works just perfect. |

kevin, you dont'catch the trout with the volume pedal. you're supposed to throw it at the fish. the fly line is to retrive the pedal. you have to net the fish.....
unless you are deep sea fishing, then you add a swivel and a treble hook and use it as a weighted spoon lure.
