| Since I will be a beginner on the steel I am thinking a beginners model would be the way to go . Within the next two weeks I will be purchasing something . Since you fellows have played most all brands , what student brand would you buy today if you were just starting out .Thanks for your help. RON |

If you'll spend a little time searching through the "pedal steel" section of the forum I think you'll find a lot of posts on the subject of best beginner steels that will have the info you're looking for.
Try using the search function with key words "Carter Starter" and/or "Stage One" to start with and I think you'll find a lot of useful info. A lot of people also recommend starting with a used "pro" model instead if possible and you'll find a lot of pros and cons on that too...

Whatever you buy, make sure it has at least 10 strings, 3 pedals and at least 3, and preferably 4 or 5 knee levers. You want to avoid any guitars with less than that. Both the Carter Starter and the Stage One have 4 knee levers.
I think the stage one is sturdier than the Carter Starter, which is a little on the fragile side, but either one will suffice.
It's not a question of brand name, it's a matter of the guitar being equipped with the necessary changes you need. If you buy a guitar with only one knee lever, sooner or later you'll read about what the other levers do, and from that moment on, your guitar's limitations will hinder you.
You want a guitar you can grow into, not one that will hold you back.

| No more than $2000.00 total investment to start out. Could spend more but think it would be wise to wait . I know the will and want to is there to play . But have to wait to see if I have the talent. It would be a big disappointment if I couldn't learn well enough to play in church . RON |

| On that kind of budget I'd be looking for a used pro model. They have excellent resale value so you will not loose money if you give up on it. whatever you get be sure and pay attention to what Mike P said above. |

buy something that won't get in the way of your learning. i bought a MSA starter and it was a mess. things were always breaking, it would never stay in tune and it was only 3 pedals/1 knee lever to begin with.
i just bought a beautiful new sierra and have learned more in the last 2 weeks than the previous 3 years!

I assumed as much Ron, and think you are still in range of getting a used pro model AND having enough for an amp, volume pedal, bar and a steak dinner 
It might take a little looking and a wee bit of luck and patience but thats how I'd go. I am not a seasoned player nor buyer of these intruments however so maybe I am wrong. ....wait for some other more seasoned players/buyers to confirm or deny what i just said. I know i got very lucky when i found my used pro model.

Keep an eye on the "instruments for Sale" section. There's some wonderfl deals that pop up from time to time. If you shop carefully I'm sure you can stay within your budget.

I would agree with putting your money down for a Zum StageOne to get started.
Well built, great looking, good sounding guitars!
I only sold the one I got last year to keep peace at home, she said "5 is 1 to many"!!!
