does anyone know who plays steel on the album "hello vietnam- country and western war songs" by a group called the lonesome valley singers? i picked up the lp disk at a yardsale about a million years ago. it's all scratched up and didn't even have an album cover. but aside for the propaganda for the war in vietnam, it's really one of my favorite country albums. the back up band was spot on. just one of those things i've always wondered about.

wish i could find a better copy with a cover for cheap(i've only found one copy online for over $30 not including shipping....)

thanks folks. c

Connie:

It does look like an interesting album. Suppose they would've used that kind of cover say, six years later?

Notice the rifle is pre-M16 — an M14 or M1 carbine, I assume.

Wish I could hear the tune samples. RealOne is saying, "There is no software update from RealOne to support this content: dnet."

The Lonesome Valley Singers were on Diplomat, an el cheapo 60s-70s label out of Jersey, unless you ran across someone who played on the record, i'd be suprised if you ever found out who they were.

http://forbiddeneye.com/labels/diplomat.html

There was a plethora of labels in the 60s that did this, most were related to a bigger, but not always major label, these cheapo imprints would try to exploit just about every genre from the era, sometimes you find gold when they used a local act to cut an LP of knock-off tunes or covers.

(eg: Red Rhodes on Crown, Red Rhodes & The Detours on Custom)

These budget labels also licensed early indie label recordings by artists who had gone on to become stars, you get the picture.

Ker-ching.

The Happy Listener's Guide to Mind Control amusingly lists this title as:

"What real Americans were listening to during the Summer of Love. From the LP Country and Western War Songs, which was offered on late-night TV, from the looks of it."

http://www.wfmu.org/onthedownload.php/category/mindcontro

But, don't expect to find out who these guys are anytime soon, although a massive google search might get lucky.

Are we sure that isn't Hal Rugg on "Got to Be Done"? Now I'd like to hear the rest of the cuts.

Sounds like they were working in a Tubb groove there, doesn't it?

Connie - Are the geocities clips playing for you? A tech question was posed in the Computers section, and a couple of other folks are getting error messages, too.

Sure sounds like Buddy Charleton to me, at least on the one song from Jason's link. I couldn't get any of the songs at the first link to play either...

Direct link to the "Done" song: http://tinyurl.com/5l5gdk

Charleton would make sense stylistically. Wasn't his mid-'60s tone always darker than that, though? I'm having trouble reconciling the sound on this track with that on the studio cut of "Pass the Booze."

hi guys, the original site that i posted (by sheepwoman?) played all the songsfor me originally but after i played all the songs, i tried it on another computer and it wouldn't work. i have run into sites that only allow so a certain amount of downloads to go out per month. this could be one. after listening again i realized that it had been a while since i had heard it. there are still some gems on it, but not as 100 % great as i had remembered. if anyone wants to hear more, just email me and i'll send along an mp3 provided you have high speed or lot's of patience. c.

ps, jeff, where can i find that cut "pass the booze"?
would love to compare....

It seems to me there are recordings by Charleton with tone similar to this track, and of course like any player's tone it can vary from year to year and even session to session, with different gear, different studios, engineers etc.; in any case this just sounds like his touch and phrasing to me...

I could be wrong of course!

Don't know where it was recorded, but from the style and tone, my guess would be late '50s Walter Haynes. Smile

Well... after hearing those clips I'm wanting to say maybe Weldon Myrick, but what do I know!

I'd love to hear a definitive answer if anyone out there knows; the steel sure sounds good whoever it is!

What I heard was Hal Rugg, except "Why Doesn't Someone Write to Me" and that sounds like Weldon Myrick. But, it could be Hal as well. I will listen to the rest when I get back home.
