I just finished listening to Mike Perlowin's new CD, Spanish Steel, and it's my favorte recording that Mike has done. I especially enjoy the interplay between the percussion and Mike's pedal steel guitar and other guitars. My favorite cuts are Asturias and
Canto Gatano. I can tell that this recording is a labor of love for Mike, and probably very labor intensive. Mike has layered many different parts and has created his own sound. He is the "Phil Spector of the Steel Guitar." Well done, Mike.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the kind words. But you got advanced copies that I burned at home. The "real" release won't be available fr at least another 2 months.
The hangup right now is the cover art. After considerable work, the artist and I both decided that the original idea of a picture of me playing the steel in a matador's costume wasn't working, and instead of looking clever, it looked stupid, so it's back to square one.
Then, once the art work and layout are done, there's a 4 or 5 week turnaround time for the manufacturer.
I'm quite impatient to get it out, but we all have to wait till everything is right. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Boy, if I applied that test to my own CDs, I'd never release any of them!

But Jim, your playing is so acceptable that we don't care if the cover looks stupid.
Seriously, dressing me in a matador's costume was a theoretically good idea, but it just wasn't working.
I may BE completely nuts, but I don't want to LOOK that way on the CD cover. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

This:
was sort of the original concept.
Now I have no idea what the artist is going to do.
But while I'm waiting, I'm recording a companion CD, to be called "Spinach Steel" and featuring songs about vegetables, such as "Rhubarb Tuesday," "Let it Beet," "Talking sprout my generation" and the great country classic, "She thinks I still Carrot." _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I'm sure many of you guys will relate to this. When I was working as a sideman, I always appreciated it when the front man trusted me enough to allow me to play whatever I wanted, as long as it worked. I never liked the guys who tried to tell me what to do.
I take the same approach with the creative people who work for me. This includes the drummer, Dave Beyer, who added his parts after I recorded all my tracks, not before as is usually done. I gave Dave the tapes and told him do do whatever he wanted to. Those of you who have my West Side Story CD can attest to what a wonderful job he did on that. Sometimes he came up with things that are completely unlike what I had envisioned and took me by surprise, but once I got over the shock, I realized that his ideas were always better than mine.
The artist who is designing the cover is named Gary Miraz. Gary has my complete trust and confidence. I have no idea what he's thinking at the moment, or what he's going to come up with for a cover concept. But whatever it is, I have no doubts that it will be better than anything I could dream up. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike, I love the new record. It's just amazing how you are able to put all this together. I'm thankful for cats like you that not only stretch the boundaries of the steel, but (at least in my case) stretch the ear of the listener. The production and mix are great and the percussion is killer! Rock on, dude. _________________ Joe Savage

Now that Call Any Vegetable has been mentioned and you are so ambitious Mike, why not do a whole record of Zappa covers. That's classical music, ain't it? That songs's the first thing I thought when I saw the vegetable tangent. _________________ Joe Savage

Joe, I'm glad you like my CD, but you can't possibly be enjoying it more than i am enjoying yours. I think your "perennial Sideman" is the best steel guitar CD I've heard in years.
Everybody reading this, buy Joe's CD. It really is that good. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
