Burn the bedding and get something from the chemist to nuke that pest. Stay away from cheap hotels.

Speak English. This country speaks, and is governed by English. Not German, Italian, French,
Yiddish,Arabian, Spanish, Swahili, Hopi, Inuit, Portugese, Untold Celtic Dialects,
Fractured Hoch-Deutsch, Swedish, Broken-Sicilan, Pig-Latin, Morse Code, and Braille.

You want to live here? Than speak the lingo.
Especially the Pledge of Allegiance. That was a MUST for both my parents when they got off the boat. One Italian, one French. They wanted to live here, bad enough I guess, to at least memorize the Pledge, AND, in English.
I get REAL irritated when I make a [ultimately] phone call to some ambiguous entity, and they have the gaul to spiel their rap in English, and, ah, Spanish!!!! Why Spanish?

If you're going to try to be politically correct and please the whole friggin' world, then what's wrong with all the other languages in not being represented. Give me a break!

Speak English. Learn it. Try to learn it. Or take the high road!

Mr. Fossa:

If you'd taken the time to run any of this thread through a translater you'd know that all this is just silly nonsense. There is no real conversation going on here. You're all worked up over nothing.

As for "Spanish!!!! Why Spanish?",..."Speak English. Learn it. Try to learn it. Or take the high road!"...

I met my wife in Mexico, married her there and moved her up here. She teaches English to classes of Latinos, she speaks English, Spanish and French fluently, also some Italian, German and Dutch. She agrees with you (with less prejudice) and in fact tells the Latinos she comes into contact with the same basic idea, but without "take the high road" ...that English is this country's language and they should learn it if they're going to live here.

As for "Why Spanish?", I can help answer that question if you really want to know, but I doubt you'd like the answer.

In case you forgot your history, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California and some of Colorado and Utah used to BE Mexico.

Go to any of these URL's and read for yourself, and I'd bet you and most of us would be surprised at exactly how we got those territories.

www.historyguy.com/Mexican-American_War.html
www.dmwv.org/mexwar/mexwar1.htm
www.pbs.org/kera/usmexicanwar/

That's "why Spanish".

Yes, I'm a flag-waving all-American like you and I agree anyone moving into this country should learn the language but keep in mind that English wasn't always the national language here and some of the original natives like to pass down their ancestral language. The ones moving here also can't be expected to learn English overnight, now can they?

Finally, this Forum has had a lot of "heated discussions" in the last year, resulting in sudden closing of several and some people going away more than a little p.o.'ed, and it has survived them. Those discussions at least pertained to the steel guitar in some way or another. But I'll be damned if you or anyone else is going to go on this Forum and post racist B.S. b0b, please close this thread before I get pi**ed.

Thanks, Mr Phelps, for pointing me in the right direction. Obviously, you, and not me,
can read and interpret what I take for being German.

I'm just like you and love a great joke/spoof.

I apologize for not being as introspective as yourself. It's just my lack of language skills, I guess.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by CHIP FOSSA on 17 August 2002 at 08:18 PM.]</p></FONT>

Save your sarcasm. Of course 99% of the posts here are in German. You're going to try and say you were just kidding now? Your Speak English post doesn't show any indication of being a joke and you said a good deal more than just relating to the German posts here. If you were trying to be funny, I'd love to apologize to you but it doesn't look like it to me.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 17 August 2002 at 08:49 PM.]</p></FONT>

The Steel Guitar Forum was started in the USA by English speaking persons. You are all welcome to start your own forums in whatever language you choose. Goodbye to Msrrs. Bovine, Pettit, Frost, Henry, Jansen, Schmidt, Abend, Ms. O'Keefe, Jeffreys, Miller, Hoffner, and Glockler.

And who made YOU king? First, this entire thread was all just a gag, second, there is nothing in the Forum's rules about in what language posts must be. Third, b0b didn't shut this thread down for it being in a non-English language.

It really amazes me, the mentality that "if you're in the U.S.A. you must speak ONLY English!" I suppose when these people visit a foreign country, they immediately know and speak the language and never English, for as long as they're in that country!

And there's something wrong with people who speak English 99.9% of the time, speaking (or writing) in some other language just for laughs once in a while? It can only be because too many people are just paranoid and jealous of anyone speaking anything that they themselves can't understand. Case closed!<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 17 August 2002 at 09:42 PM.]</p></FONT>

Are you going somewhere? ¡Adiós! When b0b says "Only English allowed here", agree with it or not I'll respect his authority. Not yours. Then, only English from me! I'm gonna go lay in the chaise lounge now...uh oh, that's French, can't say that here! Out of the humor section, but maybe it belongs here.... Image

The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has
been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for
European communications, rather than German, which was the other
possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a
five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro
for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the
soft "c".Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with
joy. Also, the hard
"c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up
konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be
growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words
like"fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be
expected to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are
possible.

Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which
have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre
that the
horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they
would go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by " v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords
containing "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer
kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil
be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu
understand ech ozer.

Ze drem vil finali kum tru.

We know how we got those states from the Mexicans we took it like we took it from the Indians and I agree with Chip Fossa if you don't want to talk English pack up and get the H--- out of our country where we give all those people free medical and support and we reach 65 and can't get perscription coverage.Big deal we have Medicare and the we have to pay all that money to cover our medical exspence. But those people up there in the white house can line there pockets and give us that went and protected them with our lifes can get S---.

Okay, I retract my cranky comments from last night (which I leave in for continuity). If you start a foreign language thread, please title the thread in the that language. That way we stupid Americans won't click on it to start with.

There's no Forum rule that says posts have to be in English, and I'm not about to make one now. However, if someone wants to get intelligent replies from the steel guitar community, they should post in English. The vast majority of steel players in the world speak English.

I'm closing this topic.

Received from Ernest in email:
<SMALL>b0b, I apologize for causing bad feelings and confusion with that German sentence. I used German because I had read in German about a similar thing happening to a chap named Gregor Samsa, and the story was very moving. It seemed to lose something in English. You can read here about the translator's struggle with Gregor's story. And you can rewad his whole story in English here .</SMALL>
