| I was searching Wolfgang's Vault & came across a concert by a San Francisco group called Clover that had John McFee (before he started the Doobie Brothers) playing guitar & Steel. Boy does he have some nice licks & is featured up front throughout the concert. I haven't followed his career ever since, but wonder if he plays steel anymore? The lead singer of Clover went on to have a good career, Hugey Lewis.
I'm not sure, but I don't think John McVee started the Doobies. He has played with them for a number of years, but I think he joined them mid-stream.

| John started off with Clover(really he was ninety percent of the instrumental part) and left after the bands first two records were released. He joined the Doobie Brothers in the late seventies along with Michael Mcdonald. John plays good steel, guitar, and fiddle... he was just born to do it. He is featured on Carlene Carter's latest cd. He also formed a group called Southern Pacific in the middle eitghties which had some charted records. |

....John McFee also played steel on an album by Norton Buffalo,the harmonica player who was linked to Commander Cody.
The album is "Lovin' in the valley of the moon"with an excellent instrumental called "The Jig is up".
Fred Jones is the other steelplayer on the record.
John McFee also played guitar on some Emmylou Harris records..e.g.White Shoes.. |
