Ill be playing steel for Jean Sheppard tomorrow at the Gibisonville Ohio festival. Mrs Sheppard went through a few songs with my boss,David Church, tonight at his home and let me tell you this ladys voice was flawless. I loved playing some great classics with her like, Slowley, Slippin Away, Waltz of the Angels and Satisfied Mind just to name a few. And let me tell ya fellas, this lady knows her way around a steel guitar. She was naming some of the great steelers and asking me for some of thier licks on some of the material
If any have the chance to play or hear this wonderfull lady sing live,,,Do It !!!

I'm certainly a big fan of Jean's. Her records bring back many fond memories of my youth. And she is singing as well, or better these days!!

One of my favorites! Her lead player, Mississipian Danny Dickerson, isn't bad either!

My friend Phil Koontz has the pleasure of backing her and several other of the Grand Ladies of Country Music at the 76 Music Hall in Branson and I know he enjoys it very much ! Incidently he does a great job and is a fellow Sho Bud user (the last time I looked) Of coarse fellow forumite, Dave Robbins can tell you all about backing her on the opry. I have visited with her and I agree, she is a Grand Lady and very knowledgeable.

A total class act. When you think of great classic country music, you always have to include Jean.

Hi Rick- Glad to hear you are working with Jean.
She is just great, and always mentioning the steel player.
Ask her about my old friend Jimmy Yates, a great steel player with an original PP Emmons.
He used to work for her...good luck to you..are you still playing that Carter?.......al

Well fellas all I can say is ,WHAT A SHOW !!
Jean was awesome
I talked with Jean for about an hour back stage before the show . We talked about the Opry & the changes there. Jean told me about her recent visit with Jhonny Paycheck, how sad the story there. She told me stories of Hank Senior & Audry, the Possum & how she gave George that name & we cant forget a few funny stories about Tater Jean talked about Mel Tillises recent sale of his club in Branson I was living a dream
As I was changing for the show I was listning to Jeans CD on the bus and let me tell ya fellas,,what a great steel player Jean has,,Dave Robbins !! awesome !!
Time for the show, there was I would say 2 to 3 thousand country starved fans waiting. When Jean came on stage the crowd was so loud I could barely hear the drummer counting off the 1st song,,Silver Threads & Golden Needles. The crowd was overwhelmed by Jeans singing & stories.
Talk about pressure, I dont know how I made it through the break on Slowly when Jean walked over to me & applauded my playing to the crowd, what a lady
Jean had a standing ovation on Amazing Grace.
But she really brought the house down on the last song of the evening, Second Fiddle with her yodeling.
Too soon the show was over but what memories What a lucky steeler I am !!

PS,,,Yep Al, still playing that Carter

Rick,
glad you enjoyed pickin' with Jean. I've enjoyed backing her for nearly 10 years now. It is definitely a steel gig! She is a lot of fun and definitely the "Grandest Lady!"

And, thank you for the nice words about our CD project.
