Topic: Stringmaster neck separation. |

| I noticed a little movement between the necks of my Stringmaster when set up on the legs when I would lift it with my hands at the opposite ends to re position it. Is this normal since it's not one solid piece? |

I would refer you to Alan Brookes and his post concerning the restoration of a Stringmaster. "The restoration of a Fender Stringmaster D8". Last post was on or about 20 March 2008. Could also contact him directly I would guess for sage advice.

| My D8 was a bit loose, I took off the diamond covers, and tightened the the nuts underneath. This effectively shortens the rod length between the necks. Don't overdo it, but they probably worked a bit loose over the years...Jerry |

| Thanks Jerry, that worked. I'm able to see a gap towards the headstock end. Bridge end too tight or do I tighten the headstock end to compensate? |

| I should have said loosen rear end to compensate. Also, should I be tightening/loosening both sides? Big and small diamonds? |

| Eric, there should be no gap between the necks. My Fender T-8 had a rattling sound and all I did was remove the little diamond plates on the side facing me when I'm sittin at my guitar and tighten up both allen head bolts equally. |

| Sitting on the playing side, the headbolt to the left will not tighten. It seems to be stripped. The necks are not that far apart only you can see the rod where it comes through the middle if you look closely. |

Those tie-rods have a 1/4-20 thread, so if the threads are stripped you can get a length of threaded rod and cut it to the length of the original. Threaded rod is available at places like Home Depot, Lowes etc.
Maybe the wood is warped slightly, and someone tried to pull it together and stripped the threads on one end. You can replace the rod, but take it easy when trying to pull the necks together. Is that a D-8 ??
If it is, I may have a pair of those rods here you can have for postage.
