| I have noticed recently That the Derby guitars I have heard recently have a sound much like an Emmons. I went to see a local icon recently (Chubby Howard)and I commented after his show how much his Derby sounds like an Emmons; at least the way Buddy seems to have his set up. Then on Tommy Butlers site I heard Lynn Owsley playing a Derby and I heard the same tone. Is this sound characteristic of the Derby or is it set up or effects? I really like the sound for the most part but wonder if it can be altered. I would like to be able to soften it down a bit as I think it may be too much sometimes. Thanks, Greg |

Greg, I have a SD10 Derby ,Its definately the guitar.
A well known player in Nashville has both a Derby and an Emmons. His comment to me was ( close your eyes and you can't tell them apart).
The only other Guitar that has that sound is the one Gary Rittenberry is building ( the Rittenberry).
By the way I love my Derby.

| Greg...yes they do have a sound (and playability) similar to an Emmons. When you speak about "softening" it, you may be one of the people that would prefer not to use the E66 pick-up that comes standard. Just for kicks, I just got a TrueTone wired to 18.5k that I'm going to put on my SD10 this weekend. I've always been a big fan of the single coil sound, and to my ears, the TT is my pick-up of choice. I'll let you know how it sounds a little later! Derby is indeed a fine guitar. |

| Roger I think you hit it. I just saw BE on a vid playing a Zum and it had the same sound. Is it the pick up that's giving it that tone?????? |

| I don't think it is by accident that Derby's sound alot like an Emmons. When talking with Charlie Stepp a few years ago he told me that he sold Emmons guitars for many years. The very early Derby's had body dimensions that were identical to a PP Emmons body. I had one of the early one and a later guitar which was slightly longer and they both had that Emmons tone. I put Tru-Tones in both of them and a good friend of mine set it up for me. He is a very accomplished steel player and he played it with the Tru-Tones for 15 minutes or so and he said..."If that don't sound like and Emmons, I don't know what does". If you're going to play a Derby, you better like that Emmons tone, cause their built to sound that way. |

| The TT went on the SD10 this weekend. Obviously, I had to dial it into the amp a little differently from the E66, as I was running the bass fairly high to keep the highs from being too shrill. Once I got it set, not only was it smoother to my ear from full lows to clear highs, the string seperation was trmendously more pronounced. It sounds great in the music room, I'll have a better idea after this coming weekend gig. Right now, the prospects look really good! |
