Where would you put the 5-position switch for a George-L 12-5 pickup?
The guitar is a 12 string Universal on a 1.5 black mica body, built by Rittenberry in 1993. There is no pad.
Would you get a control plate?
And what type of knob would be best?
Drilling holes in the endplates is out of the question. |

Thanks, John.
I do have a mini-switch inside the back apron for the pup that presently is in the guitar.
I cannot see the switch, but I can feel it.
But I need to actually see the 5-position switch.
Otherwise there will be too much fiddling under the apron. |

Nic, I used the 5-way GL for many years on many guitars and I found the best place is on the rear apron on the right side. This leaves the left hand free to deal with the bar while the right hand turns the switch.
Of course, you may have to drill a hole for it, but in my case I'm already sure I'll keep it there.
I also use a "chicken head" knob to make it super easy to see, or feel, the switch position in dim lighting. And it's also easier to turn the switch with picks on your fingers.

On some guitars I have used either a small flat aluminum plate or a small piece of aluminum angle mounted to the inside of the rear apron on the very RH end. I used a generic round Radio Shack knob on it. Feel was good enough and I didn't have to see the position of the knob. This prevents its getting damaged by the case during tear-down and keeps the wiring as short as possible. You'll get used to not having to see the actual knob position to know where it's at.
