I want to thank all involved people at the MASGA show that went on this passed week end in Pelham N.C. I aploigize for my thick head actions when I could not play my steel right and got away from it. I did a lot better Sunday as I was determined I would play that steel if it killed me.I had a great time and I enjoyed all the great steel players. I met some of the forum mates that I chat with on the computer. Bob Hayes you don't seem like a grouchy old man to me you treated me fine.Once again Thank you Ken,Latchum, Mike Calloway, Jerry Flemming , Skip Mertz, and all the rest of the players. Also a great violin player Kens wife Lee great job.I will be at the next steel show in Mountain City N.C in July and hope to be playing better and acting like a gentalman and not like a Child.

Sam,
I choked up a little too..It's strange working with "Tracks" when you are not used to using them, but all of the guys and gals were very courteous and understanding,,and Easc indicated ..heavely..and repetedly that that venue WAS FOR ALL LEVELS of playing..I got a lot out of it as I am sure the rest of the participents did. I did a lot better playing with the live band..and when we jammed near the end of Saturday night..I think that I was more comfortable and more in command of my playing..and I think we realy "COOKED".Too bad that there were not as many participent..as we expected.. Hpefully the MSSGA event in Mountain City,Tenn..next month will bring more participents and listeners.
Folks it's only about $10.00. All of you Steel Guitar enthusiest..that want to have a good weekend...please join us at the American Legion in Mountain City, Tenn July 27 &28 (Sat & Sunday. This event is Hosted by non other than Emmons Repair Guy Extrordinare.(and former Builder of Emmons PSG) Mr Bryan Addams. Also shedueled to be thereis a former Ray Price "Cimmeron" and currently the main man at the Nashville Palace..Mr Mike Sweeny. His protigy from Roanoke.Va Mr Jerry Flemming will be playing his NEW! Marlen D!@..and IT IS a beauty..and the way Jerry playes it is something off beauty. Steve Lenord and his Dad from the Bristol ,Va area are also on tap to be there..as well as Sam ( WHO STARTED THIS POST) AND OTHE MEMBERS AND NON MEMBERS OF THE Mid Atlantic Steel Guitar Assc...Skip Mertz may apear..as well as many other. If you are in the area..or just want to come and breath some good fresh Mountain air. Come to Mountain City... And Sam..things will be alright in this RELAXED atmosphere.
Mountain City, Tenn,, is between Bristol/Abington VA and Boone,NC... If you need directions..ContacT Bryan Adams, me Bob Hayes(Grouchyvettn@MSN,com) or Mike Sweeny, Sam, Ken Latchem,The great DL from Abbington Pat Jenkins,JERRY FLEMING, STEVE LENORD. or any one involved. and SAM ..you'll be fine.

Hey Bob,
It will be good to see you there as well as Bryan, Jerry, Eddie, and all. But I have one question. What is a Cimmeron? There is a band back in Roanoke that even had a record deal at one time called Cimmeron but I never played with them even though I knew all of them. Joey McCrea has played steel with them since day one over twenty years. He's a great player maybe somebody up there can get him down there.
Yes I did a short stint with Price in '98 and that makes me a former Cherokee Cowboy.
I'll be looking forward to seeing you. Take care,
Mike Sweeney |

Thanks Bob for the kind words and I'll try to control myself next time. It just tolally ticks me off when I can't get going. I do better than I did and it bothers me to think that I practice 3 to 4 hours every day.5 years is a long time and I go and blow it in front of everyone. At least I got to enjoy MIKE,BO,JERRY and you Bob and the rest of the steel players. This is something I wanted to do since I was 8 years old and only got around to it 5 years ago.I see other guys sit and play better than I and they have only played for ywo or three years. Maybe I'm not ment to play Steel giutar. But I will play this animal if it kills me. I'm determined and will not give up.OK you guys have a great 4th of July as I'm headed for Rhode Island to my Vice president of the R.I.Steel guitar Assoc. 4th of July Party and all our steel players will be there and we have a blast with fireworks at 9:00 PM.See ya all at the next show in Mountain City the 27th and 28th.

Hey Guys!
I had a blast and everyone played great! For those that did not make it you missed a good one! Ken put on a first class Jam! Great Band ( best bass player I ever worked with ), Great Food and fellowship! It was great to see and hear so many of my old friends. I would encourage everyone to attend and support all of the MASGA Jams in the future... you just don't know the fun you are missing.

Sam.. you didn't blow a thing my friend. Now if ya ask around you will learn that my first jam with the crowd was so horrid that I screwed up a lot bigger than I even want to think about. This weekend I had a the time of my life. I enjoyed the best pickers around and what a sensational back up band. I feel bad that Ken had it all on his shoulders and a poor turn out compared to what we should have had. The guys who didn't come missed a fantastic event and I would just like to thank you personally Ken for all you did as well as your wonderful family. Since you started this thread Sam let me just say a few more things. I am happy that you picked North Carolina to come and live and I am especially happy that you joined our group. You're a good man Sam White and I believe that from the bottom of my heart. Debbie and I are happy to call you and Ann our friends. Your abilities on that steel will come out as soon as you get over the jitters. I know what the love you have for that steel and with that you'll beat the jitters. The guys in this organization are the ones that make me feel like somebody even when I know I can't play as well as most but best is not important to these guys. The love of Steel playin is. Oh.. if Jerry will just drive down to Smithfield I will try to get him straightened out on "Sweet Memories" (hehe)
Love ya all

Now for you Mr. Boo. What more can a man ask for in a friend??? I have so much fun with you. You make me feel 18 again. Well....... till the next day (hehe). I have loved steel playin my whole life and have my favorites.... But if anyone hasn't listened to Boo Miller spill his heart out on those silver strings they have missed a great deal in the steel world. Mr. Miller is one of the....if not "the" best steel players I have heard and I mean that sincerely. He plays the fast licks like no one else but he has so much heart in his slow stuff I think you gotta be blind if you can't see the man's soul when he plays. I am proud to call you my bud Boo but more important.. I am proud to call you my friend. The best to you and the family and I will see ya in Tennessee. Deb said the only Woodsheddin you're gonna do is what she does to you in the woodshed for this past weekend. Hmmmmm you better bring help bud she's soundin mighty serious. (hehe)
Take Care My Friend and call

Thank you Ray for your kind words I know what I'm able to do on the steel and I did not do any where near what I'm capable of on it.Oh well there is the next time I guess.I just got to nervous and it is not the first time and probly not the last. You did a pretty good job for not practicing but only a hour. You did good on Sweet Memories.I'm having a blast trying to play it and I always come up with a diffrent way of playing it and it does'nt sound too bad. Some day if I live long enought I'll be close to Pro.Thanks again for your support everyone and Ray you and Debbie are our freinds and we are glad we made this move.We are headed for Rhode Island next Tuesday for a R.I. steel guitar forth of July Party and Jam at our Vice Presidents house Manny Escobar.

Hey guys lets not for get Deloris what a great steel player she is. I think John Hughey better watch out if Vince Gill hears her play John may be looking for a new singer to play for. Was'nt she a fantastic Steel player.Sam Hytt told me about how she would be in bed and think of a sound in her head and get up in the middle of the night and play what she had buging her head. A freind of mine that lives in New Bedford Mass does the same thing some times it is 3:00 in the morning and he goes in and practices what he hears in his head while sleeping. I have the same thing happen to me but I don't get up and practice and when I get up in the morning I can't remember what I heard.Maybe I ought to get up and practice and my wife will shoot me thinking it is a burgular.HAHA Great job Deloris and keep on Steelin

Hi Bob!
Thanks for the "welcome"! I -- or anyone else for that matter -- could not tell you were nervous at all! You jump right in and pull it off! (How DO ya'll do that?!!) How about me, having to sit in the same ROOM with you guys! And right beside Jerry Fleming?! Talk about being intimidated! Ha! I will say this about the steel guitar community, they have all been wonderfully open-armed and you just don't see that in other organizations . . . I do feel like "family"!
Yep, I've got my feet wet and now I need to get to work on it so I can participate more!! Hope to you see you soon!
(Funny, I have never seen you grouchy!)

Hey Bob maybe we need to take some lessons on not getting nervous in front of people.Ha that is a joke in it's self.Ray said he was so nervous he just kept playing and it worked for him.He got so much comfidence in him self he took over Boo's part Heee Heee. Just Joking Ray . You did a nice job on Sweet Memories even if you think you did'nt and you better play tonight and don't worry what other people say they can't even sit behind a steel.Don't let me go there and find out you canceled out on us.You will be more comfortable sitting in with a band.I did in R.I. with four bands and did not know what I was doing but it sounded OK to the people and me so that is all that matters.None of us are perfect not even me when I throw a tantrum in front of a bunch of strangers like I did.My wife was pretty upset with me for acting like that. She feels I inbarresed her in front of all the people there and I did and I'm sorry and appolgize to everone

Hi Bob and Sam: When you guys figure out how to play infront of people without getting nervous, please let me know.(we'll get together and patent it) I get so nervous that I have a built in Vibrato in the volume pedal. Now thats nervous. I was playing "Precious Memories" in church one Sunday night and my wife was backing me up on the Guitar when she noticed my right foot was shaking so bad she actually thought I was making that vibrato sound intentionally. Ha!It was so bad I took my foot off the pedal to try to make it stop and then put it back on and the Vibrato started right back again. You don't think the reason I was so nervous was because Mr Arnett Mills was in the audience do You? Now I can talk to you about being nervous. We all had a big laugh after it was all over and I had wiped the sweat from my forehead! Ken Latchum (Mr MC) [This message was edited by Ken Latchum on 28 June 2002 at 08:07 PM.] |

Hi Ken yer you are so right about the Vibrado on the volumn peadal. I use to use it to block off my notes but got out of that habit.I.m just a thick headed Yank.We went to see a band last night and I had to beg Ray Walker to play he was afraid but he player and I think he is trying to out do Skip he done a great job and I'm proud of him.He was just playing and laughing and having a grand old time. He and his Wife Debbie done a great job of singing together. He said he did 'nt practice for awhile yer tell me another story Ray. I'm kind of mad at him for leaving me so far behind now.

Hi Kim!
It was good to see you again at the Jam and a Hearty Welcome to the Forum! I am sorry to hear about your A pedal rod breaking! Kinda need that one! Clearly that push-pull is ready for retirement.. want to sell it? it sure does have a killer tone. You sounded great! you just need to jump in and play more and punch out your volume! don't worry about making mistakes or being nervous having fun is what it is all about.. trust me I have made my share of mistakes Ok, my share and then some!
I have never seen anyone so determined to play steel and learn. Kim plays much better today than most after only a couple of years at it. She is going to make us all want to throw our bar & picks away very soon! Keep up the good work and practice those scales!
All the best,
Jerry Fleming |

Hi Jerry!
It was great to see you at the Jam -- intimidating to sit so close to someone as good as you, but great to see you nonetheless! I was hoping some of your licks would jump on over! I can't find any of them yet, but I'm still hunting!!
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It really does mean a lot to the "little guy" . . . "girl"! Ha! I can't hardly wait until I can have fun with it and not be so dagonne nervous in front of you all! Believe me, none of you boys love it any more than I do! Thanks too for all your help over the weekend. The seminar helped a bunch and put some things into perspective. I know most of the other folks were way above the basic stuff you taught, but it really helped me a lot and I do appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time! I know . . . I know . . . scales . . . ugghh!! Ha! Alrighty then! Let me get off here and go practice! Hope to see you soon!
Kimmylou!
P.S. You can forget about me retiring (or selling) the push-pull . . . like ya'll, it's family now! Ha! Hey! Will you teach me "So Afraid of Losing You Again"?

Hi Sam!
4 or 5 hours a day?! Whew! I need to quit one . . . or two . . . of my jobs! Ha! I'm glad you have the time to devote to playing -- that's what it takes, huh? I wish I would have started a long time ago, then maybe I'd be able to play by now! It sure does take a LONG time to get good, doesn't it?! You're doing great!! You just keep picking!! Nice to meet you this past weekend and I hope to see you again soon!
