I just had the pleasure of hearing the Vanduras CD, "In the Dark," featuring the utterly tasteful playing of steel guitarist Gary Brandin, a Forum member and contributor. It's a terrific listening release; if you're looking for hot licks and country fills to use on the bandstand, look elsewhere, but if you want sultry steel guitar in a non-country setting, by all means pick this up through www.pascalrecords.com. It's been described as "surf-noir" and "spaghetti western with a twist of exotic." It's a cocktail that goes down easy.
Gary's been on the L.A., CA scene for many years and is presently heard on the Spongebob Squarepants TV show, playing with the Blue Hawaiians. His playing is tasteful, soulful, confident and right on the mark. I've listened to the CD over and over; it's a pleasure to have on in the house. All the tracks are top-notch, while "Rope'n Pineapples" has slick country/Hawaiian picking in it. Gary's touch deserves the utmost respect; when you hear it you'll know why. Enjoy. |

I may as well be the one to point out that you can also get this CD from... da-daaah! http://b0b.com/products/music.html
- and help support the Forum at the same time.

Gary, you've done worlds for the steel guitar. Kids flock around me when I play, to see what makes that SpongeBob sound. I just bought a SpongeBob t-shirt to wear when I perform.
Folks, the Vanduras CD shows another side of Gary Brandin. It's mostly a record of modern original instrumentals, recorded to high standards. The tunes are beautifully melodic, not at all cartoonish. It's one of my favorites.
