My band had the distinct pleasure of opening for the Kingston, Ontario - based band Luther Wright and the Wrongs. They are currently receiving a lot of ink and air promotion for their current tour, "Rebuild the Wall". They have reworked the entire Pink Floyd album "The Wall" into some VERY HIP country arrangements. Along with the entire Floyd album, they round out their sets with some great original tunes. Their music is reminiscent of Burritos, Poco, New Riders, and even a little Buck thrown in there.

Now, the part most of you are interested in: the steel pak-a-seat is very capably filled by Burke Carroll, of "Northern Steel" pseudo-fame. Burke plays with several Canadian bands and appears to be equally at home with country, western swing, country rock, and bluegrass/reso. We had a great time listening to each other and grinning a lot -- super guy -- super picker. Burke is not a computer user, so Bob Taillefer and our other Canadian compadres need to get him online. He plays a gorgeous lacquer Fulawka D-10 and makes it sing!

WARNING: You're not gonna hear an "Evening with Ray Price" or even Dale Watson, but you will hear some very fresh country stylings that most Forum members could appreciate. Those of us who lived through the late 60s - early 70s and actually remember Pink Floyd (a small subset, no doubt ) will enjoy the twists they put on "The Wall" even more.

For tour info, go to Luther's Website. You won't regret it. For those who fear they'll rock your socks off -- that's not really true. The band plays at a reasonable level and finesse is the name of the game with them. I highly recommend you check them out. They'll be in NY/NJ/OH/TN/MO, some out west as well.

I saw Luther here in Edmonton a few months ago and bought the CD. Great stuff. The live arrangements were even better than the recording. A lot more steel live.

Hello Larry,
I'm so glad you finally had a chance to meet my good friend Burke Carroll. He is one of the finest and most versatile musician I have ever met. Burke was online for a while but he had to give it up because he did not have enough time to use the computer. When he leaves town to play with Luther, Doug Johnson or myself fill his shoes with the Texas Swing band The Bebop Cowboys.

Your ears must've been burning Bob (a US expression, I'm sure ), because Burke and I were talking about you.

All good . . . of course. I agree, he is a really great player I'd never even heard of. I listened to a few cuts off 'Northern Steel' but must've missed his. I'll have to buy the CD now fer sure, eh?

Take care,
LTB

I just got the record yesterday in the mail--it's a hoot. Right up there with Hayseed Dixie's Tribute to AC/DC...
