Jerry Byrd Course

Post by Jude Reinhardt »

Will someone tell me how to "search" the archives to find previous posts about the Jerry Byrd instructional course for non-pedal steel guitar?

Jude,

Try entering the keywords "Byrd" and "course" (without the quotes) in the Search Query, then select the Search for all terms option. You should get about 64 hits. If you search on "Byrd" "instruction" and "course" you'll get four.

I also have this Jerry Byrd material and would be happy to offer any information or opinions you might be looking for.

Blake, I bought the course last night on ebay and was wanting to read about what others thought of it.

David, I forgot to use the K.I.S.S. principle when doing my initial search. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I wasn't the winning bidder, got mine with a Second Chance Offer from the seller. I actually paid less than the winner did.

Even better! I fell asleep, sad to say.
I hear it's fantastic, I'll keep my eyes open for another copy, maybe we can compare notes.

I bought mine from Scotty. It is an excellent course. Have had it for about 4 years and still enjoying it.
There is not another course which includes this much material and such a wide variety of tunings.

I think Jerry put out two courses?
One I have is copyrighted 1954 Jerry Byrd
Renewed 1960
covers:
A tuning
E Major
C#minor
C6th
C6th + 7th.
There is no matching cassette of the music
contained therein.
Good lessons and some nice songs.

Is this the one which is subject of this thread?

Jerry Byrd published several times. The first one I had cost $4.95 and was ordered from a magazine ad.
It was mostly C6. (1953 or 4 I think)

The current edition that I have, has 333 numbered pages.
It came in a 4 ring binder and was published both in Japanese and English.
It has two cassettes with Jerry playing the individual songs. With steel on one channel and rhythm on the other.
Mine also has an individual serial number.
Scotty was involved in the publication and I believe that at the time I bought it, was the sole US source for the material.
It also includes B11, E13, C#m7, as well as those Roy mentioned.

YOU SHOULD BE AWARE......................

During this past year, there was a guy down in Calif. that was pumping these courses out....proclaiming they were Jerry's original course, yet they were clearly 'duplicated' copies.

He sometimes offered them as SECOND CHANCE opportunities. They had binders and all but were still plagarized materials.

Complaints were filed with eBay by both myself and several other Forumites.

Just tho't you all should know!

Scotty's Music sells this course NEW in a 3-ring binder, and the pages are single sheets, unbound. This makes it very hard to determine whether Used ones are 'originals' from Scotty's OR bogus copies.

A few years ago I bought the course New from Scotty, and a couple of years later I sold it on eBay. When I sold it, I had to carefully explain to bidders that this was an original, not a copy. The problem is... the current Original looks like a copy. Unbound sheets in a 3-ring binder.

As others have said, this course was published in three or four editions over the years. I had one dated 1950, another dated 1953 with more material in it. I have the 1960 version with the red cover, published by Rickenbacker, and I had the current edition, large with audio. It's still the best lap steel course out there, IMHO, by the best steel guitarist ever.
