I recently bought Volume 1 & 2 of the Maile Serenaders Slack Key and Steel Guitar Instrumentals. There is not much in the way of liner notes for either record. Gabby Pahinui's name is on the cover of vol. II and David "Feet" Roger's name is on both. Just wondering if anybody had any other information on these records or the group Maile Serenaders. Was Gabby playing steel on either of these? What tunings did these guys use? Both records are great.

Vol. 1 is Feet on steel, Vol. 2 is Gabby C6 E C A G E C#
Listening to Gabby's playing on these recordings makes me want to hear so much more from this era. By the late 60s it seems he'd developed and refined his steel playing much further than most earlier recordings show, to the same ultra high level of his slack key and singing.
Hawaii's top performer, of all time. |

Thanks for the information Ron. I found the discography for Gabby at the link below that lists his name on volume 1. Maybe an error or is he just playing slack key? I agree with you on wanting to hear more of Gabby on steel. How come he didn't record more of it?

I believe Gabby plays guitar on both, but steel on one, with Feet only on steel on the 1st.
Gabby did play a lot of steel, but he played SO much guitar and sang, partied, recorded, gigged, partied, slept, AND held down a C&C job for decades, that it's amazing he got in any. In total, his lifetime's recorded output is a rather paltry amount, and that's a shame for a folk artist on the level of Woody Guthrie. Also, in the 60s until recently, the steel was not taken seriously any more, and a focus was put on guitar and uke. But, he always had his black Fender on stage in his latter days, and it was great to see him play steel. To me, that's like seeing Hendrix. |

Yeah, there is a mis-print on the album.
Feet Rogers is the steel player on Volume 1, and Gabby's the steel player on Volume 2.
BTW, the original LP covers for these two albums are different. Hula Records made new ones for the CD version. |

These are two of my all-time favorites! Hearing Volume 1 is what made me want to play steel guitar. |

No misprint, brah. Marketing. They put the names on the covers that they knew would sell records.
Notice that Joe Marshall's name doesn't appear on Volume 2 as bassist. That's because it was a still then unknown Robert Cazimero. Why put somebody's name on the cover that nobody has ever heard of, right? (This album predated "Guava Jam.") Still, he's known now, so you would think they would have corrected this on the CD reissue. _________________ For the best in vintage Hawaiian music - featuring plenty of steel guitar - listen to...

Gabby's on Ry Cooder's wonderful album, "Chicken Skin Music." That's how I discovered him. He does some great violin-sound stuff on it. |
