Post by Rocco Labriola »

I got a couple 2-3 gigs on Thursday 3/13. Anybody else going to be playing? I'd love to check out some other steel players while I'm down there.

My gig details can be found at: www.myspace.com/roccolabriola

Hey Jay,
I like your playing on the new record (my son is a dj on the U of Wisc student station, and he just did a review).

This is late notice, but I'll be playing with Jandek tomorrow (Saturday 3/15) at 7 PM at the Central Presbyterian Church for Signal to Noise Magazine's showcase.

Thanks Dan, in my mind, I don't think I could get a better compliment than from you, one of my heroes! I am truly honored! Thanks for being such a source of inspiration (and for the lessons a few years back).

Hey, Roy, could this be the same Jim Stringer that might have been playing around KC in '72? I remember seeing him absolutely tearing up the 6-string at a club in Lawrence, Kansas back then. He was playing jazzy stuff, including Miles' "Jack Johnson."
Mullen RP D10, Peavey NV112, Hilton volume. Hound Dog reso. Piles of other stuff.

Hey Susan,
Caught part of your set with Jandek - very interesting! How in the world did you get hooked up with a guy like that? What were his directions to the band?

Yea Michael, That is the same Jim Stringer. I think he moved to Austin from Lawrence, KS about 15+ years ago. I was very fortunate to have played in a band with Jim in the late 80's. Very eclectic band at the time. David Lindley, Richard Thompson, Rosanne Cash and a handful of originals. It was a great opportunity to play non traditional steel. We had fun. Jims musical talent is light years beyond mine. I learned a great deal from Jim. He is well known by locals here as being a great guy and an extrodinary guitar player. If you ever get a chance to see or play with him, you won't regret it.

Bryan,

I'm glad you were able to catch part of the Jandek set. This was my second concert with Jandek. The first was in July of 2007 with the same musicians. At the time I had neither met nor heard of Jandek. A promoter called me and asked if I was interested and I agreed to do it.

The instructions he gave to the band were minimal. Jandek's music is subtle and intuitive, so you have to be very aware of what's going on and really rely on yourslf. This approach and Jandek's sense of musicality appeal to me quite a bit. I think it's easy for a casual listener to dismiss what he does, but his waters run deep.

Thanks for coming by.
