Buck Reid--incredible

I thought I knew of every dynamite player in the business, but I had never heard of this great talent. I found his version of "Donna Lee" on Steelguitarjazz.com, which led me to his web site. After being teased by some MP3 samples, I had to have his CD, "A Work in Progress." After I got my copy, it's been played a buzillion times, and I'm thinking, "where's this man been hiding." All I can say is, WOW. Every tune on this project is beyond "over the top." There's not one boring cut. I have no idea what he's playing. His speed and tone is nothing short of stunning and I just want more of this man's playing.

Hey Gary. I'm soooo glad to hear that you discovered him on www.SteelGuitarJazz.com. That's EXACTLY what I've been hoping would happen with the website: you found a new favorite player, and he got a new fan and sold a CD! And here you are tellin' the world about it. What's not to like? It's win/win/win.

As for where Buck has been hiding, man, I saw his tour schedule with Lyle Lovett and it can only be described as 'grueling'! But it's got to be fun to play in such a Large band with so many great musicians. I look forward to their next pass thru Philly.

Buck is absolutely amazing.

He blew me away when I saw him in St. Louis, and I believe he sat in for Jimmie Crawford on one of the Hicks/Crawford sets. Talk about a tough pac-a-seat to fill!

Unreal !

I went to the website and it's just unbelievable.
I bought the CD.
I watched the videos on www.steelguitarjazz.com and was
stunned by the playing of someone named Tommy white,
another named Curly Chalker, David Wright.
Never thought before that all this could be done on
Pedal Steel, and much better sounding than regular guitar.
I can only regret not to have learned Pedal Steel instead of guitar.
I guess I am not at the end of the story yet.

I have this long time friend up in Ct, a very fine keyboard/Guitar player, he is a Jazz guy..I have know him for 30 years, even played in bands with him.

He likes Steel Guitar but it not really a FAN so to speak..

A few weeks back I sent him Donna Lee and Scrapple from the Apple by Buck..

He sends me this note back and says..

"Those are the best versions of those songs I have ever heard, man that guy smokes ! "

and he does..

I came to live in the US in 1997, but didn't get to my first ISGC until 2000.

I bump into my old pal, Jimmie C., and he says - 'Wait 'til you hear THIS guy...!

I was amazed - here was someone who sounded so totally accomplished, yet his name meant nothing to me. It struck me then that he must have been quietly honing his skills, getting a living from his steel guitar, but still relatively unknown to the world at large.

Well, he's a bit better-known now, even if we do inhabit a fairly claustrophobic environment here is Steel-land. I've had this CD since it was first available, and I think it may be the best PSG album for years.

Buck is also a lovely chap, and was very helpful to me a few years back when I had a problem with my Emmons - I was passing through Nashville, and Buck made himself available and fixed my guitar up perfectly! He also showed me some great stuff - one of the tunes on the CD was in its development stage and I got to watch his terrific playing on the low C6th strings up close-and-personal.

I have a very select short-list of favourite 'new' players - Steve Palousek, Tommy White, Randy Beavers and - right at the top - Buck Reid. (Of course, these guys are far too good to be 'new', but I think you know what I mean....)

You MUST have 'A Work In Progress' in your collection.

Hey guys and gals; if you truly love steel guitar, contact Buck's web-site and buy the above mentioned CD. It is absolutely fantastic; Yes, Buck is still working with Lyle Lovett; been with him for seventeen years; must be doing something RIGHT. And as others said, Buck is truly a gentleman. I knew his DAD several years ago from central N.Y. State, and he was a good steel guitar player, so it's no surprise that Buck followed in his foot steps. Get his latest CD and you'll wear it out the first week. And, remember, Buck is one of the GOOD GUYS..Bernie Whoa!

I can highly recommend the tab transcriptions of Buck's tunes by Fred Amendola and Buck that are available on Buck's website www.buckreid.com
Some of Buck's voicings I never would have figured out by ear...now it's just a question of being able to play a tune like Alabama Jubilee at one-quarter speed Smile

- these tabs are as detailed as I've ever seen and a real good insight into Buck's musical abilities.

I never thought this was possible on a steel guitar.

The CD is superb and a display of Mr. Reid immense talent.
I wanted to order the backing tracks in the same order (having the CD and the BTs sent together), but that option doesn't exist, so I will order the BTs
separately, not that I want to use them for the lap steel (I wish), but attempt personal guitar versions
with them.

A privilege to listen to you music Mr. Reid.
Are you coming to L.A. by chance?.
