Well, He's going to be in town this week end and my wife has free tickets. I don't remember what he sounds like but I thought if he had a steel player I would go. Maybe I'll just give my ticket to her sister. Thanks, B.

I've lost touch with Hal, but he lived in Austin for a long time. If my opinion is worth anything, Hal is a fine singer, a fine songwriter, and a professional.

Hal moved to Nashville from Texas and took Forumite Scott Neubert with him as steel and dobro player. Scott played lead guitar in my band before he moved and made my job as bandleader so much easier. Scott is a great musician in about every way I can think of.

I don't know if Hal has a steel player or not, but I wouldn't let that stop me from going to his show, which undoubtedly would be entertaining if you like good music and songwriting. But if you're of the opinion that the only music worth listening to has steel playing in it, then it will be a roll of the dice for you.

BTW, Scott hasn't played with Hal for a long time, as far as I know.

I think Hal Ketchum has a wonderful voice! He may not be the most tradtional country singer around, but I enjoy his style. At least it's his own!

Hey Billy, I said the same of Garth, still don't care for him but I guess millions of people do. Your opinion is your opinion and that is how it goes, take care.

I don't know who wrote it, but Hal Ketchum had a song out called "You Will Stay Forever," which was really nice - simple and elegant. I don't think there was any (or much) steel in it, but I'd go to the show just to hear him do that one song.

My wife and I saw Hal in concert her in Tucson last fall, and he did not have a steel. His newer material was much less country than his earlier material, but his performance was heartfelt and intense as always. My wife is a HUGE fan of Hal's, and she switched to country when "Past the Point of Rescue" came out in '92...turned on the country station hoping to hear that song, and found out that the rest wasn't bad either! I had been trying to get her to listen to country for years, and she wouldn't give it the time of day until that song. So thanks to Hal my wife has loved country music for the past 10 years.

Thanks, everyone. I took your advise, Herb, and went to the show. It was a fantastic show. IMO he has a unique voice. Not the country I'm used to, but he performed well. And he wasn't too loud. I'm glad I didn't miss it. Also Thom Besh was an added bonus. Thanks again Herb.

Smiley took me to see Thom Bresh in Nashville last summer. Just having him on the ticket alone is enough reason to go! Image

RetCop88, That's my feelings. I didn't know about his health problems, but his show was very entertaining and his voice was great. I have to commend the man for his sincerity and music ability.

I, too, like Hal's work. Just this morning heard a 4/4 shuffle called "She's Still in Dallas" (I believe that's the title) that I hadn't heard before. Good song!

I think Hal's "Small Town Saturday Night" is one of those quintessential country songs. Very nice piece.

I bought the cassette with Small Town Saturday Night on it when it came out. If i remember correctly it is written, or cowritten by Hank Devito. But i like Hal's voice. It's different than the usual.
