Question for Derby owners

Post by Drew Howard »

I have a Derby double ten that came with George L E66’s in it. They are thin sounding and to my ears not the best pickup for the guitar. I’d like to switch them out for Truetones. Are there any Derby owners on the forum here who have made this kind of switch and can speak to the tonal differences?

thanks,
Drew

I had TT-10 on my S/D 10 Derby. Big difference over the E-66. The single coil sounded real good (mine had a very slight hum) I don't recall what I had them wound to. But I ended up with L XR-16 in the Derby & was well pleased with the results.
Good luck

Drew, buddy, I have one you can try out if you'd like - I sold my Derby before I had a chance to install it! PM me and we can link up.

Drew,

The E-66 in my E9th was too bright for my ears,
so I ended up going with a TT and it made
all the difference.
On C6th though, I have a 10-1 which sounds great.
At least that's what my ears tell me.

I've always used Geo.L. 10–1 P/U's in my Derbys!

Tommy Butler recently got a new SD10 Derby with a George L 10-1 and it has the tone most of us are really looking for.

I have a Derby D-10 that had Geo-L Tommy White pickups when I got it. They are great, somewhere between my Emmons and my Sho-Bud, sounds great.

PICKUP COMPARISON

Post by Lee Brideau »

Drew..If you go to the CARTER steel website they have an audio (MP3) comparison of several diffrent pickups, this might help before you buy. I settled on the TT10 for my Derby, waiting for it to come in.

I had two Derby's at the same time...one had TT's and the other had 10-1's. When I heard them side by side through the same amp...there was no contest. I put a set of TT's on the other. I just sold the last Derby to a buddy of mine and he called me just this afternoon and said "now that I have that guitar dialed in...I have to tell you that guitar has more tone than anything I've heard!"
