another pilot moving to Dallas?

Post by Joe Stoebenau »

I was asked at work the other day if I wanted to move to Dallas?! From PA, that's a big move.
I fly medical specimens at night so the weather would be a whole lot better than fighting the ice and snow here in the Northeast.

I know absolutely nothing about the Dallas area. I would be flying out of Love Field. What is real estate like within 30 min driving of there? I would be looking for a 3-4 bdrm rancher with some land (I have 5 dogs).
I bet it is more expensive than here in PA!

What towns should I start to look at for houses?

Any advice from Mickey Adams?

Thanks in advance!

For 32 years, I worked at the intersection of US75N and US635. This is at the northeast corner of Dallas. I lived 17 miles east of this site. My average travel time to and from work was 45 minutes.
30 minute travel time from Love Field is not going to get you very far. Homes with land.......are not going to be plentiful.

thanks Roual,
I thought of that later on last night. I'm spoiled living here in PA out in the boondocks and it's only a 20 min drive for me to work.
I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years and forgot how long a commute can really be in the big city!

Well, with those hours, you won't have to worry about rush hour(s)

Joe,

There's no ILS's in Texas...nothing but NDB approaches. I think there might be one reverse course localizer.

Just kidding. I think TX would be great flying and I know they've got good music. ie Justin Trevino, Jake Hooker, Amber Digby, etc...

Good luck!

Joe

I know pilots like up to date info , but back in
1970 my self and a couple other fellows picked up
an old Branif Lockheed L188 at Love field ! we all
come down with Monta-Zumas Revenge -- must have
been something we drank . East Texas is like flying over
water , nothing but flat - if your like me , any thing lower
8,000 is just a hill , in texas anything over 400 Ft is a mountain .
so much for every thing's bigger in Texas .
good luck & stay safe
Hick

Them Texas fellows are going to eat my lunch now !! :whoa:

Danny , you're right. I usually start about 10PM and work util about 6AM depending on how challenging the weather is. So I never see rush hour. That's fine with me!

I thought of that today so I can live further out and not worry too much about the commute.

Russell, My truck is a 1951 Chevy half ton. It has a 235 with a 4 speed. It's deluxe with a heater and radio that still works. I kept it 6 volt. I hot rodded the starter by adding an extra field coil so it starts like a champ now. Also rplaced the entire brake system and put in a double master cylinder to make it safer. Other than that, the truck is stock and we are keeping it that way. It never wins at shows but I drive it a lot and have more fun than if it was a perfect show truck. I like the 55's. They have a good stance.

Well, if you have your own puddlejumper and thinking about commuting into the Class B at Love, there are a number of pilot communities with pretty decent runways. I owned some land at one time at Eagle's Nest south of Dallas (asphalt runway/taxiway). Great group of people there. There are also a number of other home/airport developments around the area.

Although I prefer Ft. Worth and points west, the east side of Dallas (Rockwall) is nice with a huge lake. It is/was a bedroom community, but like everything else, growing.....

Come On Down!

I think youll find that the real estate here in Dallas is a little more resonable. Im renting for the first 6 months. Im in a 5 BR home for 1200 per month. The property taxes are higher than im used to, but for the money Im getting a lot more home here than Las Vegas thats for sure. Im flying out of RBD and settled in grand Prairie, about 12 minutes to the airport, Joe what are you flying?...and whats your schedule like?....Give me a shout, anything I can do to help?...Mickey in Dallas...

Joe, you'll love flying around here. If you'll be down here flying a TBM 700, I think I know the outfit you'll be flying with, and one of the Dallas pilots is a great friend of mine. He's flown the PC-12 and the TBM.

I fly out of Arlington and am just now learning how to play the steel, though I've been flying for 22 years. Finding anything near Love is going to be tough with land. But, housing abounds, and with the mortgage crisis, there are lots of homes available, and few are moving unless they're basically under-priced. Feel free to PM me and I can fill in the blanks a little bit. BTW...I have a good friend that lives in Schnecksville, PA...and yes, y'all are spoiled up there. :D

The DFW area is great. Good luck on the flying side of things, too.
