What is the most common E9th setup? Also, what are the most common string gauges for E9th? I have 4 levers & 5 pedals. Here is my current setup:
RR Lever - Lowers 4 & 8 E to D
LR Lever - Raises 4 & 8 E to F#
RL Lever - Lowers 2 E to D
LL Lever - Raises 1 from F# to G
A Pedal - Raises 5 & 10 B to Db
B Pedal - Raises 3 & 6 Ab to A
C Pedal - Raises 4 from E to F#, Raises 5 B to Db
D Pedal - Lowers 2 Eb to D
E Pedal - Raises 6 Ab to B
Gauges I use: 013,015,011,014,017,N20,N26,N30,N34,N36,N54,N68
This is a S12 model. Any help from you guys would be much appreciated!!

paul....i don't play a 12 string but i would imagine your 4&8 E-F# should be E-F....and 4&8 E-D should be E-Eb. i'm sure someone else will chime in soon.

Thanks for the input. I'll try those tunings & see what happens. If anyone else has any suggestions, I would like to further explore the options.

if you click on the 'strings' option at the top of the page, you'll see what normal gauges are offered in sets. hunt around on the forum for 'tuning set-up for an S12' to check your changes.

Another issue is your second string. You say that RL lowers string 2 from E to D. It should be tuned open to a D# and lowered to a D. Then it seems that you have have the same change on pedal D. Why duplicate the change?

Paul, I don't know whether you are just starting on steel or have been playing awhile but on your setup, there's something you may consider (if you are just starting). Both of your knee levers that raise and lower your E's should be on the same leg, and perferably on your left knee. The reason being, you never use both at the same time and being on the left knee doesn't intefer with the volume pedal since they are the most used pulls. The RKR is usually the knee that lowers 2 and 9 and LKL raises 1 and 6. Some do use your type setup but I myself found it much easier to have the E's on the Left Knee. This is just MHO of course and just a suggestion. I don't play a 12 string either and may be way off base.---Henry

Henry,
I have played this same S12 MSA since 1979. I would only consider myself an average player tho because I have not really taken the time to advance my playing skills after about the first 3 or 4 years of playing. Just recently I have committed to myself to become a student of my instrument again. The more I read after you guys on this forum...the more I realize how much I have missed out on. Thanks for the advice on the levers...it sounds like the logical config to go with.
