I've had this song on a Tammy Wynette vinyl "LP" since the early 1970's and more or less from when I first heard it, it's been something of a personal anthem for steel guitar.

I've always loved that track; I agree it's gotta be Pete Drake.
Is that on CD now? I've got it on vinyl from years ago too... |

I listened to it. It doesn't do anything for me. And not much steel in the song either.
If I wanna hear more steel guitar intensive country music, I've got Charley Pride's 'Wonder Could I Live There' and Wynn Stewart's 'It's Such A Pretty World Today' on my hard drive. |

Leslie, you're right ~ there isn't a lot of steel on the track, and that was one of Pete Drake's hallmarks. He was definitely one steel player who seemed to practise the "less is more" maxim.
. . . and if I want to hear more steel guitar intensive country music, I've got (among a host of others) Charley Pride's "Live at Panther Hall" which I personally regard as an anthemic steel guitar album as opposed to a single like the Tammy Wynette song, and as opposed to instrumental steel guitar albums.

Labi Siffre's `Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying` has a tiny bit of steel on it which makes the song for me.
