Just done it on Keiths Sho-Bud, Thats a set of strings off and a new set on and tuned in 12 minutes.. Its easy on a sho-bud with the slots rather than the pins I think!!
I am sure you all need new sets on so lets see if you can beat that!

I don't really know, I've been playing a bunch of years and have never changed a set! I usually just change one when it breaks or is about to break or when it goes dead...........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

15 minutes on my Emmons, and that's my consistent time.
12 minutes is good, but you should have a four-minute handicap added on a Sho-Bud - why can't ALL steels have those swallow-tail thingies...?

I've always thought that one of the string manufacturers (ya listenin' Jagwire?) should host a string-changing contest at one of the steel shows/conventions. You bring your own set, or buy one of theirs at a nice discount, enter the contest, no electric screwdrivers allowed, only manual peg winders, and have at it. (Oh, and you have to be 'reasonably' in tune too; ya can't save time by letting them be all loose and floppy). Winner gets two sets of strings free. Runner up gets 1 set. Something like that. Good fun, good promotion for the string co. and a bunch of fresh, new strings running around the steel community. Can't be bad! |

David I know this thread is about changing a whole set of strings, but I have to mention a change I did in the late 80's on my Sho-Bud when I popped a 3rd in the middle of a gig.I'll bet I'll never be able to do this again at this speed. I always have my 3rds and 5th strings ready next to me "just in case"...... On this occasion I unwound the remainder string, had the new 11 gauge on, and tuned up ready to take my solo later in the song......all in 45 seconds. The band's roadie was timing me on his watch. As I said I'd never do it that fast again...must have been a one off!! plus I'm much older and slower now

I always thought this would be a fun thing to do at a steel show kinda like a race. This could result in a player having the undisputed time and a wonderful
entertainment to an audience. |

It takes 45 min on my homebuilt. I made the slot not deep enough so the ball end of the string keeps slippin out, dang thing. Luckily it has never broke a string since Sept. |

How should I know.....or even guess?
I've probably been playing more years than you have lived....never broke a string.....the extra set I bought with the guitar is still in a box.....hope I never need to use them.....if I do, I guess I'll just have to find out whether Scotty's will change them. |

Hey Jimbeaux, I think that's an excellent idea, and I'm game for that. Only problem is, most of the artists that play Jagwire's tell me they don't need to change them as they don't break, and they don't go dead. Herby Wallace recently told me that the only reason he changes his is only because he feels "guilty" for not doing it. No wander we can't make any money here!
In any event, we'll do that, but you've got to be one of the participants, and hey, I'll give you a set of strings even if you loose. How's that? After all... it is your idea! |

Cool!
Maybe everyone should have to buy a set of Jagwires (at appropriate discount) to enter, cuz I can think of some guys who would try to game the system by pre-cutting their own strings and stuffing 'em back into the envelopes, etc. We don't want any of that sort of hanky-panky goin' on. This is good, clean, family entertainment, folks! So, pony up for the new set; you'll use 'em sooner or later, and they're great strings, so what's not to like?
p.s. Hey, y'know, I just gave myself a good idea: I should pre-cut my strings now so next time I need to change a set, I won't have to take time on that step. Gee, I'm smarter than I look! |

Agreed Jim, they have to be "Jagwire Strings" for the contest. If they're precut, or not Jagwire's, then the rest of us will do all we can to publicly embarrass and humiliate him, and we'll put a Black Diamond decal on his guitar.
Plan on being here with us at the next steel show this summer! The folks absolutely loved your show last year! |

Jim. We'll be changing the dates this year so it will be before the Branson show in an effort to avoid colliding with the dates. Sometimes this is hard to do with the many shows that are going on during the summer months. The "Birthday" phone call was a real hoot last year! |

I don't know how long it would take to change my E9 strings; I've never tried it.
In about ten years when they wear out I'll let you know. |
