The "Pro's" used steel guitars

I have often wondered what happens to the Pro's (BE. Jernigan, Hughey, Johnny Cox and the others) old used guitars. I often see them playing a different guitar at the various shows. I know many have more than one guitar but do they sell or turn them back to the manufacturer, sell them privately? Some times I see them on the forum after several years. Just curious. Thanks.

I bought 2 black Emmons with wood necks from John Hughey (Trap Truly owns one of them now) and a red Emmons from Bob Hempker (All push-pulls) Sadly enough I let all three of them get away for one reason oe another. They were all great guitars. However I still got "Ol' Whitey" That one will go to my Daughter someday.

I have the late/great Jeff Newman's Kline U-12 he used for a while when he toured the states doing Seminar's in the early 80's. And, I just sold Joe Wright's Mary-K1 U-12 a couple of months ago to a gentleman in Queensland Australia.

I had one of Tom Brumley's ZB SD-11's. I got it from him in 1996. I used it onstage and the studio. It was a wonderful playing and sounding guitar. Then in 2006, Tom decided he would like to have the guitar back, which I promised him if he ever wanted to. Its back with the master now. I do miss it though.

I have one of Mr. Hughey's last Emmons LeGrande III's lacquer body, the black transparant finish one with 9+9. I also have a '94 LeGrande II 8+8 Mauve mica that belonged to Dave Musgrave when he was playing with Ray Price. I also have an EMCI black 8+7 that Mike Cass used as his personal guitar.

I've always had the impression that, with the handful of 'name' players whose reputation carries sufficient weight, they'll get a guitar at a 'trade price', then sell it for a small profit when their next new one is ready. An Emmons or a Zum loaded with 9+9, for example, is desirable regardless of its history. If it has previously been played by a 'heavyweight', it becomes that much more sought-after.

Certain players seem to have a new steel each time I see them play!

I have another friend who has a white push pull Emmons that was built for Barbra Mandrell, but because of the car accident she had, she didn't take it. It has a plaque on the front with her name on it.

I now own the rosewood EMCI featured on the cover of Buddy Emmons Christmas album. Used on that recording,it has the original unmarked E-66's in it I believe,newer body decal though. Funny, but it doesnt sound like the same guitar when I try to play on it Wink

I might swap it for say, a black D-10 EMCI...maybe 8x7? Any like that around? Smile

I have an original and squeaky clean 69 ZB D-10 that belonged to Sonny Curtis which he used in touring (no mention was made of studio use) with Tammy Wynette. It later sat under the bed at his sister's house for years. Forumite Tom Anderson sold it to me, so I assume he got it from Sonny's sister.

To clarify:

While there have been guitars provided free, that's unusual. I know that some makers (I won't be specific) have provided steels at a heavily-discounted price to their 'names', and sometimes at actual 'cost'. I consider this to be a legitimate expense, and it would fall under the heading of 'advertising costs', surely?

This being the case, I would doubt that the practice has much impact on the price we pay for a new guitar. In the case of six-string guitars, the production-totals are so much greater that the impact would be even more negligible.
