Good ole vintage twang. I can't help but think if Buck Trent ever took up the steel, this is exactly what it would sound like. :D

That Carl Butler is a great singer. I'm surprized I really never heard his music in my house growing up. My folks had the radio on country all day in the 50's and 60's. But I do recall the name.

Larry, if you are talking about the CMH album "Honky-Tonkitis" by Carl & Pearl, that's Jeff Newman on steel.

Kind Regards, Walter

Listened to the CMH version, it is different, so I can't really tell who is on steel.

Kind Regards, Walter

You're right Larry.

That is some good stuff there. Beats the heck out of Rascal Flatts. No comparison really.

Hey, what's wrong with this picture (On "Don't Let Me Cross Over")? Check out the bozos on the left who are clapping in 4/4 time to this waltz. Obviously a lip sync, but still weird to see. Who's the steeler in the video, and who's the steeler on record?

Rick, I am sure that Buck couldplay the steel. I remember distinctly back in the days of Hee Haw. In one show, Buck sat down behind Curly Chalker's steel and did a beautiful rendition of My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You.

Steel in "Don't Let Me Cross Over" sounds like Pete Drake, but I do not think that is him setting there.

Another's memory still haunts you,
and you cain't get him off your mind.

But darlin' you won't find the answer,
in a song, a beer or glass of wine.

Why, oh why my heart keeps giving,
to a love that's growing cold,

If you don't change yer way of lilving (yes there's an "L" in there!)
you'll get honkytonkitis in your soul.

What a nice piece of music. You can't get anymore country than that.
I was bassplayer in a houseband in the sixties in Toronto. We backed up Carl and Pearl Butler for a week.
He was just the nicest guy. On the breaks, he would hang with the band, telling jokes and stories. I'll never forget his kindness and being just down-to-earth.

I believe it's Howard White playing steel on camera in the "lip-synch" video of "Don't let me Cross Over", but the soundtrack is the original recording, which is Pete Drake (playing his signature C6th style of that era).

Also this was recorded 1/12/61, at Columbia studio
