Why aren't they used more often? Is there a major drawback to them? It seems to me, that surface mounting is much easier than routing and that the high clearance of a lot of lap steels would mean we don't need to sink the pickup into the wood. Just drilling a hole for the wiring isn't very difficult.

I think this is a great question; particularly for custom and home builders. Maybe one reason is conventional wisdom and/or the somewhat more limited number of surface mount pickups choices.

I remembered a discussion way back in 2004 about the Charvel lap steel that evolved into a pretty technical discussion of pickup mounting - dug it up, here:

Thanks for the link Ben, that was a good read.

Bob hit on one reason you don't see it more is there is not a big selection of surface mount pickups.

Hmmm ... a "flashback" ... Mr. Green

Just to add something to that old thread ...

Ie: A pickup mounted to a wood 2x6 only ...

I now have a Grade N45 NIB ... thats 4" x 2" x 2" ... (don't ask why I bought a $105 NIB) .. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Anyway ... the field is so massive ...

You can take any coil (even with no pole pieces or blade ... just an air coil) ... wax potted to the max ...

Stick it securely to the "Big NIB" ...

Wire it to a jack ... plug it in to a little amp (turned way down) ...

And it will pickup your finger gently tapping ... on the carpet ... over 1 foot away from the magnet Shocked Laughing

I've got an Emmon 8 string that has a thin, wide surface mount pickup that sounds really sweet and warm and has decent output. Plus, it's totally encased in metal, so there's very little hum. It could work for a lot of designs, since it is such a low profile pickup.
