Topic: What's the diff between the LTD 400 and the Nashville 400? |

There are 2 Nashville 400s available. I'm thinking about getting one. What's the difference between it and the old LTD?
And does anybody have any other comments about the amp? |

| Pearl, the OLD LTD 400 is identical to the Session 400, only in a smaller cabinet. The Nashville 400 is/was a whole new design. The Session and LTD amps are WAY superior to the Nashvilles, IMO. Easier to work on, too. |

Thanks Steve. I had an LTD but it got stolen. It was a better steel amp than my Music Man HD 212, but it wasn't as good for guitar. The music man is far more versatile. The best sound I ever got was when I combined them.

Mike, I own both amps, and mostly prefer to use the LTD. The amps are almost exactly the same size, but the LTD weighs about 10-12 pounds less than the NV 400. It's a noticeable difference if you have to carry it very far. I estimate that the LTD weighs right around 50 pounds.

The big difference is use of discrete devices (Session 400 and LTD) vs integrated circuits (Nash 400) in the design. Some would argue that the discrete transistors sound more 'tubey'..
I've owned both and prefer the Session/LTD. YMMV

I owned both over the years. Had them both in my posession for several years to compare. I too preferred the LTD-400.
After modding my first Nashville 400 I realized there was no contest, the N-400 was now warmer and easier to tweak!
I have even done the Sarno mod on the LTD-400 and Session 400 amps. A great improvement, but I still prefer the modded N-400 every time. |

Hey Mike!I have an LTD 400 and I used to have a Nashville that someone had given me.from what I remember the Nashville had a Comp/Limiter built in and there wasn't an off switch?And every time that it kicked in I wanted to shoot it,I would rather blow up the speaker,The LTD seemed a lot louder to me, Stu

I have tested the limiter on the N-400 amps on the bench using a 1000Hz sine wave and a 400 watt dummy load resistance. Works well. Right at 200 watts the sine wave stays pure and does not square off unless pushed really hard. For most normal applications it will not square off.
Saves speakers from that square wave and destruction. It is not the power that kills the speaker! A BW can take 350 watts of pure sine wave. The idea is not get get a distorted/squared off wave to the speaker voice coil. That overheats it and destroys it.
The old LTD and Session can destroy any speaker, regardless of power rating if pushed to square wave clipping.
The moral of that story, get a more powerful power amp to get that undistorted signal to a speaker that is rated for the power you are sending it.
And yes, the N-400 compressor can be eliminated, just unplug the compressor chip and prepare to buy speakers on a regular basis!! |

I'm going to go with Ken Fox. Even unmodded, I prefer the NV 400 to the LTD, and I've had 3 of each at various times. But I'll add that the condition of the speaker does have an effect on the sound of each individual amp. YMMV.
And yes, I've blown Black Widows in my old LTDs, but not with a NV400.
My favorite NV400 was one with the LeMay mod, which was before either the Peavey mod or the Ken Fox mod. Should never have gotten away from that amp, but I started endorsing Evans amps and just divested myself of Peaveys for awhile.
