The Beatles songs do lend themselves to the steel,
last year I played at an open mike club and the owner had booked a Beatles tribute band from Liverpool to play at his Santa Pola Palace night club a few miles away, they turned up at our gig when they had finished their's , they got up on stage to do a few songs as the Beatles, I asked the John Lennon guy if they wanted me to leave the stage, he replied "No you f***ing stay there wack and play with us" they gave me solos in every song , The one that stood out from the rest was I saw Her Standing There, I must have been inspired ,the solo I done came from somewhere else , it was perfect ,I don't think i could repeat it again , I just wish someone had recorded it.... sorry to ramble on but it was something special to me, knowing that I had that somewhere in me..

tonight (its 2.30 - I just got home) I had to (try and) play a bunch of rock and rolly type songs amongst a whole bunch of songs I DID know enough of to make a decent stab at. Our guitar player threw them in - from his old repertoire - to fill out the time. our set list tonight as it turned out (dodgy R&B/R&R*)

High Fashion Queen
Hoy Hoy Hoy *
Whisky River
Cow Cow Boogie
Hello Walls
She's Not for You (I love playing this - does the original have steel?)
Blue Moon of Kentucky
Brand New Heartache
Strong Boy
Close up the Honky Tonks
Baby Please Don't Go * minors

Christine's Tune (don't ask!)
Gonna Be Some Trouble Tonight
Luxury Liner
I'm Leavin Now
Wheels
Nervous Breakdown * (I sorta enjoyed this one too)
100 years from Now
Johnny Law
20 Flight Rock *
Parchman's Farm *
Thunderstorms and Neon Signs

Its Time
Summertime Blues *
Mystery Train
Workin' Man Blues
Good Rockin' Tonight *
Rip it Up *
Spin my Wheels *
Folsom Prison Blues

Although I couldn't do much more than 10-8-6 rocking on the AB pedals for these songs, there was a tiny bit of each song where I could make a unique/'different' steel contribution. I almost had fun with Summertime Blues.

If I knew how to play the rock and roll style (I have a Pro-1, no C6th) - and took my Rat to gigs - there'd be no end to it.

Amy - by Pure Prairie League.

Peaceful Easy Feelin' - Eagles.

BTW - Buck Owens version of Close Up the Honky Tonks does have steel, all over it - Tom Brumley. The version by Gram Parsons has plenty of steel too, maybe Neil Flanz.
Steeless.

I add steel to "Peaceful Easy Feelin'" when I play along with it and Alan Jackson's version of "Summertime Blues" features Paul Franklin on steel, and on Dierks Bentley's "Live and Loud at the Filmore dvd, Tim Sergent plays steel on "Folsom Prison" after Dierks says "I let that lonesome steel guitar blow my blues away".

Hank, you'd be surprised how many Elvis tracks have a steel guitarist. Check out this thread....

I agree about the Dean Martin tracks. Dean makes a good C&W singer and there's a lot of material available of him singing C&W, but there's not much steel on them, unfortunately.

...but, as you say, you can put the steel on yourself.

I think Guy Mitchell, Johnny Mathis and Bobby Darin could each have benefited from a steel guitarist in their bands.

Ofcourse. I mistook it for something else. I even rehearsed it, but forgot about it in the meantime

One of the best songs I have heard in a long time, that I'm working on as an instrumental is "The Prayer" sung by Andrea Bocelli and others. It has a beautiful melody that sounds great on a steel. Now I need Tommy White or someone of that caliber to record it, to really do it right. How about it Tommy?

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, as well as some older MSAs, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.
