So what is a personal hat trick? For me it was a gig, three consecutive weeks, at the same club, with three different bands; to be completed this weekend at Ginny’s in Austin. Not a big deal, but the idea was fun. It kept me awake and on my toes.

The first band played covers from female artists from the 60’s and 70’s. A good OD on Tammy and Loretta etc. The second week was with a tradition country band, that played one 4/4 shuffle after the next. The third week was going to be a swing gig with some of Austin’s great pickers. However, I received the following email from, Sean Orr, the band leader, a fiddler:

“Looks like Mr. ?atson muscled us out of the Ginny's gig.  They offered me the 16th instead but I noticed they had Bo ... playing there on that date and I didn't want to do him the same favor Mr. ?atson did to us.  Sorry.
I'm bummed.
Sean”

I am told he(Mr. ?atson) has a piece of the action there(Ginny’s), and it appears his gig in NY and San Antonio were cancelled.

Schedule

So, I say, take the day off. Do not cancel someone else’s gig because you can. And this is not the first time this has been done.
I do not need the money. Ginny’s is for tips, beer and a 2am “Whatburger”. I guess he needs the spare change.

OK, flame off. Keep your picks on tight, and your amp loud.

Jon,

Two out of three ain't bad. So do it again... Go in, grab a table and enjoy the "beer and a 2am 'Whatburger'”.

Iam still a big believer in " You do what you say your gonna do " A mans word should be as good as a contract. So if I say Iam going to do a gig for someone, then thats what I do ( short of life or death emergency's)even if a better gig pops up,If I tell the guy Iam going to be there, take it to the bank,I'll be there !!!

Jon Jaffe is also this kind of guy !!!

Jon,I would say you have every right to be a little put out with this kind of treatment,Why should 3 different bands have to move out of the way ,just so Mr.?atson can have a place to play.I mean if this has happened to you personally 3 different times with 3 different bands, then how many other bands have got bumped ?

Lord only knows ,we dont do this for the money ( Jon and I )We do it because we like to go out and play !! It breaks the daily grind for us and it allows us to think outside a different box for a couple of hours on the weekend.

This kind of reminds me of a spoiled rich kid that goes to another kids birthday party and watches the birthday boy open his gifts and becomes so jealous and upset that his mother goes out and buys him a gift ,just so he will have something to open too,EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT HIS BIRTHDAY PARTY !!!

Here's a bump for a standup guy !!

Well one thing that playing for "tips and beer" does is negates anybody thinking that it is a serious job.

Especially the management.

When it gets to the point where the musicians pay more to get their equipment there, in, and out, than they are making, in actuality the club is relieving them of an obligation.

50 bucks is about the breaking point by tradition, so if tips amount to about twice that, and it's a "happenin place", I'd feel a little miffed. Other than that, I'd let it go like you did. You're better than that and it sounds like you know it.

Too, a man is no better than his word. Stark naked, that's the only thing you really have besides maybe your sense of humor..

If you live long enough, your life will depend on them more than once.

Sounds like your wealth is intact in those respects.

The times are changing, and as always, not for the better.
