Hi there from Arizona,

I am a newbie at the pedal steel and have a question about the X lever that lowers both of the B strings, how and where is this lever used and are there any common usages that are used. I just need some examples to get me going on this lever. Thanks in advance. Richard Bachler in Arizona

hiya richard and welcome - this place is a great help - im a bit of a newbie too - roy is right - check this tab here>>>> http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/together.html on the 3rd line down when the tab shows strings 3 & 5 at the 2nd fret to strings 3 & 5 at the 1st fret with the b pedal down replace fret 1 with strings 3 & 5 at the 2nd fret with the x lever in - also you can use it for augmented and flat 5 chords - play strings 5,6&9 at the 3rd fret with the x lever in and you have a G7b5 or strings 5,6&9 at the 3rd fret with the a pedal and x lever together and you have a G7#5 play strings 6,8&10 with a&b pedals or 5,6&8 with a&b pedals to move to a C chord after that - im sure these guys with alot more experience will offer more ideas than this. btw there is alot of great tab for classic songs at http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/steel.html Smile

Here are some examples:

Sound clip here for all examples:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/2/10/1752350/x-pedal.mp3

Lick 1 goes from 4 chord to 5 chord in
the key of G. Fret 8 string 5 is the 5th scale
tone of the C chord. Dropping it 1/2 step with
the X lever yields the 3rd scale tone of the D
chord.

Lick 2 is a fill
over the 5 chord in the key of G.
The movement makes the change from D major
to D9.

6 _____________________10----8_________________
7 _____________________________________________
8 _____________________10----8_________________
9 _____________________________________________
10_____________________________________________

Lick 3 is a single note fill going from the 1 chord to the 4 chord in the key of G. In this example the X lever is changing the 1st scale tone to the 7th. So the lick is going from a G6 chord to a Gmaj7 to a G7th to C.

7 ______8___________8_______8____8_____________
8 ___8L_______________________8L___8___________
9 _____________________________________________
10_____________________________________________

Lick 4 is the "Honky Tonk" solo. Each 3 note group
should be played as triplets. Here we're going from E to E minor (used a substitute for the A7 chord). You can also half-pedal the A pedal.

1 ___Lick 4____________________________________
2 _____________________________________________
3 _____________________________________________
4 _____________________________________________

7 _7____7____7____7______7____7____7____7______
8 _____________________________________________
9 _____________________________________________

Lick 5 involves more triplets. This is an entire
breakdown style solo in the key of A. The solo goes
from the 1 chord to the 4 chord to the 5 chord. As
above each 3 note group is a triplet. Play this as
fast as humanly possible. Works well over the bridge
of "Orange Blossom Special". Once again we're using
the X lever in combination with the A pedal to give
us a half pedal. In this case going from A to A minor.

Pay attention to the relationship of strings 5 and 8 with all relative raises and lowers.

If you focus on the LICKS you will miss the big picture.

basics:

3rd fret exercise play strings 5 and 8 only..

4 moves

A Pedal in ( raise 5)
A pedal out ( 5 natural)
Bb lever in ( lower 5)
Release Bb lever and add E lower string 8

We can see that this little exercise resolves to a D( D7) Chord on the 3rd fret.

Same phrase, strings 5 and 8 , 4 moves

A Pedal in
A pedal out
back up to the 2nd fret add F lever( raise 8 )
release the F lever while moving back to the 3rd fret adding the E lower lever string 8

Analyze/compare the two different exercises
