Topic: Best way to fasten threaded insert into leg? |

| The insert in one of my legs has pulled out. I am just thinking about appying some JB Weld and pressing it back in. Anybody have any better ideas or had any luck with JB Weld? Jeff Newman said to use Epoxy, but I am leery of that.. |

| When I did it I got a 1/2" nut and washers to use as spacers so that I could hold the threaded end in a vice without messing-up the threads, then I used a chisel to score lines/grooves onto the surface of the end that presses into the leg tube, than tapped it into place. Seems to work great, no problems so far. |

| Cliff has the answer. I open the vise wide enough to cradle the leg lug and use a chisel and hammer and go all the way around the lug scoring "X" patterns near the top and bottom being careful not to damage the flange which shows. This means you must let the flange extend off the vise jaws. This in effect knurls the lug. Place a 1/2" nut on lug with enough washers (3 or 4) to make the nut snug slightly tight yet extending above the threads so you can drvie it back into the leg with a hammer without damaging the threads. If you don't use washers and just leave the nut loose it can crush the threads. This method makes it tight as new. |

| The legs on my Fender Deluxe are a little sloppy at the threaded joint. What's the best way to remove the threaded end so I can make the repair? |

Andy, I have a 30" mechanics socket extension that I use but you can use a pipe or long steel rod. Just unscrew the clutch and remove the inside part of the leg, slide the long rod or pipe into the leg and hold the leg in one hand and knock the lug out with a hammer or against a concrete floor, etc.

| I used "Gorilla" brand glue on mine and have no problems. JB weld would be good too I think. It's just a small space that needs filling so it needs to be able to get in the knurled end piece splines. It does need to dry hard and not pliable so it won't sway. Someone repaired one of mine with a roll pin. It don't come out but it still sways. A rainy day project maybe?. |

| Thanks for the input. I have a workshop,chisels, and a vise. I understand exactly what Jerry and Cliff are saying, so rather than mess with glues, epoxy's, JB weld, etc. I am going to give their method a try. I think this would be more permanent and like new legs that the inserts have been pressed into.Thanks to all the responses. |
