Being new to this pedal steel thing I thought it would be easier to play something original. I haven't named it yet but I'm leaning towards 'It still sounds like crap"

Red River Valley was one of the songs I learned when I got a Sears Silvertone acoustic 6-string guitar for Christmas(48yrs. ago). There was a booklet that came with the guitar with basic instruction and songs to play.

New to steel guitar my first songs: Steel Guitar Rag & Sleepwalk. I knew those would be most requested. I am a beginner to the steel guitar, I'm determined to learn how to make beautiful music with this wonderful instrument.

On steel it was "Orange Blossom Special."
On 5-string, I'm sure it was whatever the first song is in that old Pete Seeger book.
On guitar it was "Walk Right In."

The first song Austin Stewart ( my grandson ) learned to play was Old Rugged Cross. He played it for his first time on stage at the Tulsa Steel Guitar Convention. He was 6. There never was a prouder moment for this old grandma!!!!!!!!!!

I really didn't learn the whole song, but the first melody I learned was "Silent Night". I was fooling around with a friend's steel in college.
The friend was Gene Simmons(not of Kiss fame)
That song just seem to fit the A and B pedals setup.
Didn't have a clue what I was doing then and things haven't changed much since then. Smile
