The last(first and only) steel guitar instrumental to make it to number 1 on the Billboard charts was "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny. It was the Number 1 Billboard pop song for two weeks during September of 1959.

The only other Steel instrumental that has come close was ten years earlier. Leon McCauliffe made it into the top of the Hillbilly Hit Parade with "Panhandle Rag" in 1949.

Those are the only steel guitar instrumentals that I know of making into the top 40 on any kind of national charts.

Yes Pete Drake,Jay Dee Maness and so on,but, who had the first Million seller Steel Guitar Intrumental as that kind of an Artist with a Number #1 RIAA hit by BillBoard Magazine,Cashbox or any other trade Magazine in the world and or any award show. Here, like Jerry Douglas won for Specialty instrument (Dobro) award by the ACM,but, did he have a number #1 hit record in BILLBOARD Magazine as that kind of Artist? Not on local radio,But,National or world wide. We've had Guitarist like Chet Atkins,Roy Clark,Jim Bryant and so on,but again,no Steel Guitarist. If so,Who? Leo J.Eiffert,Jr.
