first solo on steel
Terry-True Story. The very first song I played on the Hawaiian Wood lap guitar in 1936 at my first Oahu lesson, was "Nearer My God to Thee". I played Cornet in the School Band, and really liked the chordal possebilities.....al.:)

FIRST SONG YOU LEARNED TO PLAY
I WAS GOING TO SAY EITHER "STEEL GUITAR RAG" OR "I LOVE YOU BECAUSE" BUT THANKS TO AL MARCUS SHAKING MY MEMORY MINE WAS ALSO "NEARER MY GOD TO THEE". THE OAHU COURSE MUST HAVE BEEN A PRETTY GOOD ONE. THERE WERE FOUR OF US THAT WENT FURTHER THAN LESSONS OUT OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO. RUSS POLLOCK TO WWVA, MY HIGH SCHOOL BUDDY LARRY SMITH (FARON YOUNG'S COUNTRY GIRL) I CAME TO THE WEST COAST AND RUDY (DOTTIE WEST).

Assuming that you're referring to steel guitar, The first song that I learned on PSG was Tom Brumley's version of "Waltz of the Roses".
As far as the first song I'd learned on any of my other instruments, well, it was too long ago and I can't remember!

Mine was "Georgia Steel Guitar" on a mail order 6 string lap steel! through a Knight PA amp with an 8" spkr! (from Allied Radio in OH!) Some how it was easier for me than Steel Guitar Rag? On my first pedals.....a MultiKord, 6 strings & 4 pedals I learned "Melody of Love"......full chords tuned to C6th! after 6 or 7 years of copying Jerry Byrd stuff
without any pedals on a homemade triple 8 string (Epiphone parts) that was the only tuning I could play the melody on!? Still is??! Bobbe started his road to steelin' on that triple neck, but it bit the dust years ago!

Red River Valley
In all its beauty and simplicity,
if I can't play a song with the same confidence,
it's not ready to perform.
Red River Valley brought it all together for me.
